Hey guys. Sorry I've been MIA on the forum since the last brewday. Bad news though, I won't be able to make this one on Saturday. I'll hopefully be in attendance at the next one.
20-25 SRM lands you about the color of a brown ale. not opaque. I've made the previous AB clone recipe from CYBI, the color was still about 22 SRM, and looked identical in a side by side comparison with the real AB.
Definitely contributes a nice complexity not easily found by using other malts. I find it doesn't have quite as strong a roasty note as reg. chocolate malt. I use about 2-5% in many of my darker brews.
They said while typically you'd carbonate after the barrel aging, you could potentially make a cask ale. I didn't get the vibe he was 100% certain of this, so I would definitely keep the volumes of CO2 restrained (1.0-1.5 range).
PM box is cleared out now. I ended up traveling to MdHB on sunday to get makings for next weekend and my oaked barleywine. Probably won't be heading down for a few more weeks now, but send me your # anyways.
Forgot to mention in my last post, my friend Juan will be joining me and Jen on Saturday. He's been brewing extract for a little while, but looking to break into AG. Hopefully he'll find the experience as enlightening as I did when first showing up. :D
I found out the hard way :drunk:
I should've called before heading all the way out there. I drowned my disappointment about it by picking up an Aventinus and Trois Pistoles from beltway.
I was just gifted one of these for my b-day and definitely excited to try it out. I've got an e-mail inquiry in to 1000 oaks about making a cask ale with it. I'll keep you all informed if they respond.
I still need to get that from you. Kind of slipped my mind when I was picking up bulk grain from you a few weeks ago. :drunk:
I could still use it, if you've got more to spare. I'll get back to you with an exact quantity before brewday.
