How long can I leave beer in a secondary fermenter? It's my understanding that it can stay in there for months and be OK. Truth?

    Full 5 Gallon Boil (Extract)

You don't need to do anything different. A kit is for 5 gallons whether all 5 are boiled or whether you're diluting it later in the carboy. Doesn't matter. FYI, I usually start with 6.5 gal to account for evaporation during boil as well as transfer loss between brew pot and primary, then...

Any tips for inserting barb nuts into 3/16" tubing??

I can't get these friggin things into the tubing. Ordered the barb nuts from Northern brewer and it said they should fit either 3/16 or 1/4" tubing, but the damn things won't go in!

How long do unrefrigerated hops last?

    5 gallons=5 gallons?

5 gal carboys are really for secondary, as others have said get a 6.5 gal carboy or a bucket fermenter for Primary. As a point of reference, I do full wort boils and I start with 6.5 gallons in the brew pot to yield 5 gallons into my primary when I rack it. I usually lose a gallon in the...

    Enough is Enough!!!

Midwest is where I got my kit from, though I did buys some stuff through Northern Brewer. NB seems to ship faster than does Midwest.

Describe your glass carboy sanitation method.

After you guys fill the carboys all the way up with water/cleaner how do you guys dump it out? For instance, I usually clean mine in my utility sink the the basement. I just don't feel confident in lifting a slippery carboy full of 5-6 gallons of water and trying to dump it 3 feet off the floor...

Describe your glass carboy sanitation method.

I've been using plastic buckets to ferment because I'm terrified of needing to move this filled heavy carboy around when I'm cleaning/sanitizing. My bucket method was to fill all the way to the top with water/cleaner, scrub it out, dump it, rinse, then fill with water/sanitizer and...

    First Beer

Refrigerating will stop the yeast from consuming the priming sugar and thus stop CO2 production. The bottles will get very firm and that's a good thing. The bottles pressurize and any new CO2 created then dissolves in the beer creating carbonation. IMO, one week is plenty long enough for...

I use sanitized water, from the same batch I sanitize all my equipment in. Fill it to halfway up each chamber of the airlock. (There should be a line on there)
