Maryland Moving Sale: everything must go THIS WEEK!

Hello HBT family! So here's the story: my SWMBO and I do a lot of volunteer work with our church. With the severe anticipated fallout from Dorian, we have been asked to move to the Bahamas for the next year or longer to help with disaster response and stabilization. We will be leaving Maryland...

Oyster shells as a pH buffer?

I noticed that the distilling forums are loaded with folks that advocate fermenting a wash with a bunch of oyster shells thrown in to buffer the fermentation pH. They claim that if the pH is low, the shells will dissolve, thus raising the pH and that they will stop dissolving when an...

    Visiting Germany, suggestions needed

The SWMBO and I along with another couple will be spending a few weeks in Germany this summer. We are flying into Frankfurt, but from there we are unsure of what to do. We haven't decided yet where to fly home from either. The only stipulation we have is that everyone wants to see the Alps. I...

    Mason's ESB

I only post my recipes that are very well liked by everyone that tries them, and this is no exception. This ESB is based on the recipe in "Brewing Classic Styles" with several small adjustments. It leans a little to the sweet side initially, but the bitterness is firm and balances nicely...

Winter Seasonal Beer Mason's Winter Ale

This winter warmer turned out to be one of the best beers I have ever brewed. I was shooting for something in the ballpark of Dechutes Jubelale, to give you an idea of what it kinda tastes like. I kegged this batch after about 4 week primary, then let it chill in my lager fridge for about...

American Wheat Beer Mason's American Wheat (w/options)

I've been brewing this simple recipe a lot lately. There's a good amount of wheat in this one, so be sure to use rice hulls if your system needs them, mine does not (I mash pretty thin and have not had problems). This is a delicious summer beer, and an excellent jumping off point for adding...

    Lost: The End

So, after 6 seasons of watching lost and pulling my hair out trying to keep track of all the questions, we're down to the last 2 hours. ...I'm still lost. Are they gonna answer all my questions or what? Is the finale gonna be like the Matrix where they have some dude in a lab jacket talk a...

    I hate dirty kegs

I love brewday :rockin: , but I hate cleaning  . It seems I could go pro as a procrastinator, and I have put off cleaning my kegs for too long. I own 11 kegs, and all of them either have beer in them, or are dirty. Now I have to clean some during the boil so I can free up a fermenter. DOH!

    CDA recipe feedback please

Some are calling it Cascadian Dark Ale, others seem to take offense at the implied regional claims, or don't think it's different enough to warrant it's own style. Whatever your feelings on the matter, I'm intrigued by it and would like to make one. Here's the recipe that I have come up with*...

    Amber too bland

I made this Amber ale that turned out pretty good, but it's a little on the bland side. I like the color, the mouthfeel, the alcohol levels, and really, it's not too bad, but it's just less flavorful than I was expecting. If you close your eyes, you'd think it was a much lighter colored beer...

    WTB: 20 lb co2 tank

I want to upgrade my 5 lb co2 tank to a 20 lb, hopefully before I need a refill. If you have one to sell me, let me know how much you want for it. Once I find a 20 lb'er, I will no longer need my 5 lb tank. If you want it, maybe we can work something out. Thanks! :mug:

    Help with stout recipe color

I assembled this recipe based on several other Beamish stout clone recipes I found scattered across the internet. I bought the grain before punching it into any software. According to my calculations this will only get me about 20 SRM. I don't want to up the gravity much, but I'd like it to be...

Bottle shopping in San Jose, CA

I'm in the San Jose/Mountain View area of CA for a work trip. I would like to buy some bottles that I can't find at home. I would love to get some Russian River Pliny the Elder, and some Three Floyds stuff. I went so some random liquor store, and to a BevMo. BevMo had a decent selection, and...

    What grains can I SMaSH?

Is there a rule about which grains can and can't be used in a SMaSH? I assume some do not have the enzymes necessary to convert, but what determines that? Could I use Crystal 20L for instance? Victory? Carapils? I'm just curious.

    White Labs substitute for pacman?

I'm trying to collect some white labs vials to turn into grain filled tap handles. Is there a WL version of the wyeast pacman yeast? ...or alternatively does anyone have a bunch of empty WL vials they want to send me? ;)

    Breaker sizing for keezer?

I plan to run a dedicated circuit/outlet from my breaker box to power my small keezer (~5cu ft). I currently (pun) have it sitting in the middle of the room, because the compressor didn't seem to like the 16ga extension cord I was using. I'll be running 12ga wire for the new outlet, but I'm...

    Anyone bought a pump-n-seal recently?

I'm wondering if the company is defunct, or just very slow to process my order. I have about 15 lbs of hops in my freezer that I would like to vacuum seal in some canning jars, so at the recommendation of some threads here, I ordered the pump-n-seal http://www.pump-n-seal.com/. That was...
