Brew on back deck, ferment in basement... how to move wort?

So as the title says, I'm interested in doing my brewing on the back deck (level with the main floor), and fermenting in the basement. I don't want to have to carry the wort downstairs. There's a small basement window about 10 feet south of the brew kettle (kettle has drain valve), and the...

    1BBL brewery - Craigslist - Not Mine

Just saw this on Craigslist, seems like a great deal. Note that this is Vancouver, WA, not Canada. http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/for/1448788566.html

    Semi-automatic Bottling Line

Okay, so I make a decent amount of beer, but hardly drink any of it. I want it all in bottles so I can share it with friends easily. Right? :) But I still don't really like the bottling process. So I'm putting together a plan to build a semi-automatic bottling line in my garage. I...

How much does it cost to brew at the 3bbl level?

Well, I've reached that point in a young girl's life when she starts daydreaming about opening her own brewery... ;) I'm sitting here looking at 3bbl systems on the web, and wondering what the costs would be in brewing a 3bbl batch. I currently spend about $30 to brew 5 gallons AG...

How good of a rinse does PBW need?

I soak bottles in PBW in the utility sink to delabel bottles, then run them through the dishwasher (no soap) to sanitize. The first couple times I rinsed each bottle out 2 or 3 times, shaking about two ounces of water around in there. It took forever! This time I just did it once, then put it...

Fruit beer... how long in secondary?

I've had an 8% belgian wheat in primary for the last month, finally racked it onto some fruit and a little corn sugar this morning. Any ideas for how long I should leave it on the fruit to get the flavors out? Obviously the primary fermentation is done, but I want to get as much as I can out...

    Barley Crusher problem

Hi all, just got my BC yesterday, love it! I think I need to widen the gap, though, it crushed my Hefeweizen grains a little too fine, had my first stuck sparge. What do you all set it to? I'm going to buy a set of those little gauges. So, my 4 pounds of Pilsen went through fine...

Barley Crusher is on the way...

... and I think I might be even more excited than I was about getting my wedding dress. :D Don't get me wrong, it was a very nice dress... but it couldn't crush six pounds of grain a minute! ;)

This is why I can't have nice things.

Well, I've had my beautiful 10gal SS Megapot for a whole two weeks now, and it's already looking like ****. I've done two batches with it, always quick to wash it out after brewing, but the first batch I stored it with its lid on (dumb!), and when I opened it up there was some remaining...

    Real basic labels

Slapped these together for a birthday the other day, they were a hit. Spray painted some existing boxes black. The small text has the ABV, brew date, and a happy birthday message.

Bringing my beer to a picnic....

Just found out my beer's been requested at a picnic today, we're leaving in about an hour... I took 3 six packs from about 68 degrees downstairs and put them in the fridge, they'll have maybe an hour and 15 minutes in there... any way I can figure out how cold they'll get by then? I'm nervous...

    Adding fruit, avoiding infection

I'm going to brew up a wheat beer tomorrow that I want to combine with frozen rhubarb, frozen blueberries, and blueberry juice. I know I don't want to add any of them to the boil, cause I'm not happy about what the boil does to fruity flavors like that. All I have on hand for fermenters at the...

    Mid-brew... hop bag floating?

I'm 10 minutes into a boil, first time using a paint strainer bag (5 gallons) suspended over the boil kettle. I threw like 8 SS spoons in there, which keep part of the bag sunk into the wort, in a kind of circle shape. In the middle of the circle is a big "bubble" of gas from the boil, pushing...

What do you think of this for a kettle hop filter?

Still figuring out how to filter out the hops and loose grains from the boil kettle. I'll never brew a "hop bomb", heh, and I prefer using whole hops or plugs, but often have to get pellets. So I putzed around at Home Depot today and came up with this. What do you think? That's 30x30 mesh...

    Camp Chef 60K burner question

So I just got one of these off Craigslist, sweet deal at $40 for the burner plus a brand new propane tank. It looks great, but there's one thing I don't get... it says it has a "Needle Valve Temperature Control", but where is it? The (similar) burner I'd been borrowing had a tiny ball valve...

    Built my brewstand today

It's sturdy, too! :) Thanks to everyone who's posted photos of 2x4 brewstands, they helped a lot with the planning for this.

    Brewing with kids?

Okay, so forgive me, I know pretty much nothing about children. :) We're planning on having a couple of our own in the next year or so, and I'm just curious about how you guys combine this hobby with raising kids. How do they deal with the fact that they aren't allowed to drink the result of...

    Building my AG setup....

Went a little crazy with the credit card this morning. The husband's off having fun in NY this week, so I figured I deserved it. ;) Finally ordered a brew pot of my very own, the AHS stainless steel 10 gallon "megapot". I'm getting the weldless ball valve/bulkhead with it, and a hole...

    Tinfoil instead of airlock?

I figured I'd give the ol' Apfelwine a try this week, seeing as it's such a simple thing. Trying to keep it as easy as possible, I just bought a glass gallon jug of juice at the store, poured in the yeast, and put some tinfoil on the top. The first 24 hours it was in the mid-50's in the...

Ugh, first two batches are NOT good.

Just tasted the our first two beers, both AG, both awful!! We figured they wouldn't be anything great, since they both got like 38% efficiency from the mash, and waaaaay low OG's, but ugh, these aren't even going to be drinkable. Well, a do-over of one is bottle conditioning now, hopefully...
