    Gelatin ?

I have a batch of Pilsner that I’m planning to keg tonight. Most of what I’ve read about using it recommends adding it to cold beer, after cold crashing, but I’m not cold crashing prior to keging. I was wondering if it would work if I pour it in the FV just prior to racking into the keg and then...

    My babies are growing up

I’ve only been brewing a short time and always wondering… is this going to work? A couple months ago I started a frozen yeast bank. I overbuilt a starter of 2 strains I was using and made small vials of them for freezing. Each vial contains 5ml yeast slurry and 5ml cryo-preservative. Wednesday...

    Racking to keg from FV?

Earlier this week I filled one keg with Starsan solution and pushed it through 2 kegs and left in a third using co2. I was using about 5psi. I then purged each of the two that were “empty”. So I’m assuming there is about 5 psi in them now. Should I depressurize before starting the transfer? My...

    Racking to keg from FV?

After reading all of this and watching some videos, I am going to try to do a closed loop transfer. 5psi in the keg? With the various sizes of tubing and misc pats I have on hand, I think I can rig something up for each of my FV’s. Drain spouts and airlock holes being different sizes on each...

    Racking to keg from FV?

I added to my original post that I do have spouts on both and will use gravity to transfer. Will it flow through the 3/16 beverage line in a reasonable amount of time or am I better off to open the purged keg and run a hose to the bottom? Thanks.

    Racking to keg from FV?

This weekend will be my first time doing this. I will have 2 batches ready to keg. Is it better to transfer through the liquid (out) line on the keg or just open the top and run a hose to the bottom of the keg? Any other helpful tidbits would be appreciated. Both FV’s have spouts near the...

What I did for beer today

Went to clean the kitchen up around 11pm , after being out, drinking beer all day so tomorrow morning I could make a quick breakfast and start my next batch. The kitchen sink has been draining a little slow, but decided to back up completely tonight, midway through the dishes. Good thing I...

    Best line from a song

A few of my favorites come to mind… “We can share the women. We can share the wine. We can share what we have of yours cause we done shared all of mine” Jack Straw- Grateful Dead. I’m not a huge “Dead” fan , but always liked that one. “You got lucky baby, when I found you” You got lucky-Tom...

    New to kegging question

I’m hopefully buying 3 used ball lock kegs from someone on OfferUp this week. I plan to completely disassemble and wash the shite out of them with PBW. I’m replacing all O-rings and dip tubs with the floating variety. Before racking to them, I am planning to fill one completely with Starsan...

    New to kegging question

Yeah, just a consideration. I may just stick with the 4ish gallons and get exactly what I brewed.

    New to kegging question

I have not kegged before. I have a batch fermenting that is about 4.75 gallons including trub. I’m guessing I’ll end up racking about 4 gallons to the keg. It had an OG of 1.045 and should finish around 1.010. I was thinking I might boil some water and let it cool prior to kegging. Then add the...

    WLP 838 or 860 Warm fermentation ?

I wouldn’t have tried a lager yeast that warm but heard about an experiment on the Brulosophy podcast… https://brulosophy.com/2022/05/09/exbeeriment-fermentation-temperature-imperial-yeast-l13-global-in-a-festbier/

    WLP 838 or 860 Warm fermentation ?

I live in Southern California, so it’s going to start warming up. Currently temps averaging low 70’s in the house during the day and low 60’s in the morning. We do have AC, but usually keep it set around 78F. I have a batch of Pilsner fermenting. I pitched Imperial Global L13 at 69F. It got up...

    WLP 838 or 860 Warm fermentation ?

I’d like to brew a Helles, but have no temp control. Has anyone tried this?

    WLP830 question

Before bed last night, around 11pm, there was still no bubbling in the airlock, although it did seem to be building pressure slowly throughout the day, I was set to buy another pouch of yeast on my way home from work today. When I checked on it before work this morning it was bubbling away. 🎉...

    WLP830 question

I believe that’s packaging date. OG 1.045 To oxygenate , I rack to FV with short hose so it splashes a lot.Temp dropped further to about 64F. Im hoping to see some activity by tonight. 🤞🏻

    WLP830 question

I pitched yesterday afternoon around 4:30pm. Temp was 69F. It has dropped overnight to about 66F. I was hoping to have some airlock activity when I got up this morning, but still nothing. The date on the pouch was 12/23, so I’m wondering if it was too far gone. I guess if I don’t see activity by...

    WLP830 question

I ended up buying the Imperial L13. Same strain. The beverage factory outlet I went to was out of the WLP830. Bummer because they have it on sale for under $7, but I went to my local HB mart and got the L13 for $12.99. Going to start brewing shortly. I usually build a starter, but wasn’t able...

    WLP830 question

Yep. I use a wet towel sometimes and probably will with this one. I’m planning to pitch at about 68F. I don’t have temp control for fermenting, so I’m just going to do my best to keep it in the high 60’s- low 70’s. Planning to brew tomorrow.

    WLP830 question

It’s the Weihenstephan strain. My understanding is that Imperial L13, WLP 830 and 34/70 are all derived from this strain.
