    Can Muslin bags be reused?

Over the years, I've gotten maybe 20 "whisky stones" (rock cubes that can be used as a substitute for ice in whisky). Just used a couple to "sink" a bag of hops in the secondary fermenter. Worked great. They "just" fit into the carboy's hole, and getting them out meant untying the muslin bag...

Wort chilling and brew pot water volume

Wort chilling and brew pot water volume

Thanks Mac, very helpful. Yes, extract recipes. I'm not boiling my 'top off" water at this point, so I'm not sure how ice made from the same water could contaminate it. I've been using regular old tap water to top off my batches since I started messing around with this stuff in 1995, so I'm...

Wort chilling and brew pot water volume

Two questions, unrelated but both have been eating at me for a while: 1.) When transferring the wort to the fermenter I've been using a wort chiller (typical copper coil hooked up to a hose). Nevertheless, the recipes I've used only use 2-3 gallons in the brewpot and have me adding water when I...

Not getting full 5 gallon volume

I think you're confirming what I thought. I didn't use a hop bag, buy it would have literally taken up most of the pot, lol. When I drained the wort, I bascially put the hops in a strainer and mushed the wort out of them with a bowl. Oh well, I get fresh hops once a year, so next year, I'll...

Not getting full 5 gallon volume

The first problem was with a partial mash beer (I know, wrong forum) but this one was Northern Brewer's Sip of Sunshine clone, 100% malt extract. The only difference was that I substituted the pellet hops that came with the recipe with fresh hops from my back yard. To give you some idea of...

Not getting full 5 gallon volume

I've had an issue with a couple of batches where I've either done a partial mash batch, or recently when I used fresh hops, where the grain and/or hops are absorbing a lot of my wort. In the first case, I made the mistake of rinsing the leftover grain in a strainer until I got to the 5 gallon...

    New Member - NYC area

Howdy. I've been brewing since the mid-90's but it's been an off-and-on thing, usually brewing 3 or 4 batches a year. Most recently, some hops that I planted a few years ago started coming in like crazy, so I just brewed my first batch with my own hops which was exciting for me. I also...
