    120 Qt Mashtun...

Did you end up going with the 120qt setup? How long of a braid should you use for a cooler that big? it's 40 inches long.

    Tiny fermentation

laziness... I was letting it setting before taking the gravity reading with with hydrometer, but I guess I let it settle too long. O.G. 1.074 (Pliny Clone from AHS)

    Tiny fermentation

Oooops.... I think I left my wort a little too long in the hydrometer. 3 days and the natural yeast took it over, look at that krausen! [/IMG]

Specialty IPA: Rye IPA Admiral Nelson RIPA

ill take the yeast and put it in a sanitized jar, clean the carboy and then repitch onto the Pliny. Would half the yeast cake still be over pitching? I have trouble understanding the pitch rate calculator when using a yeast cake. PS So far so good, this beer smells GREAT! Still hoping i can get...

Specialty IPA: Rye IPA Admiral Nelson RIPA

I was planing on dry hopping in a spare grain bag that i have in the primary. was gonna let it go 3 weeks in carboy and then dry hop and bottle in the 4th week. I also was planing on using the yeast cake to pitch my recently purchase Pliney clone from AHS unless someone can talk me out of it.

    missed mash temp

Thanks for the tip, couldn't add any extra (cold) water as I was already at the brim of my 10gal mash tun. Few more small mistakes through the boil, but cooled and yeast is pitched. May not be the best ever, but im sure it will be drinkable. Coming from extract and not being about to get my...

    missed mash temp

I'm not freaking out too bad, obviously my first all-grain. Using a 10gal cooler to mash, my grain was colder than i thought after I preheated my mash tun which is why it ended up colder than I expected. I tried to stir my best but my crappy mash paddle kept bending, but I think I stirred it...

    missed mash temp

Any suggestions on what to do if i was supposed to hit a mash temp of 154 and missed low at 145, then had to boil more water and added it and then missed high at 165 and it took about 20 mins of stirring to then reach the correct mash temp of 154?

Boilermaker or convert cooler for mash tun

I'm thinking as others have said that it would be faster / more efficient to drain the first runnings into the boilermaker and swap it out with the sparge water 9in the 5gal pot on the burner) and get the wort starting to boil. I end up with more equipment if i get the cooler, but the price...

Boilermaker or convert cooler for mash tun

once i have enough storage for 10 gal batches i will probably mostly do those. I have heard that the 15gal is a little big for 5 gal batches (because the thermometer is mounted at 6.5 gallons) but i think i also read that even the 10gal thermometer is mounted a little to high for 5 gal batches...

Boilermaker or convert cooler for mash tun

Hey guys, I got a 15 gal BoilerMaker kettle for christmas and I am very excited to move to all-grain brewing. Previously I have only had a 5 gal pot to do partial boils in with steeping grains. I am new to this and am trying to wrap my head around the process of using the BoilerMaker as a...

I am traveling home for the holidays and want to bring a case of homebrew home to share with the family. I will be driving in the car for about 5 hrs or so and was wondering if i should chill the beer ahead of time or if i should just bring the beer warm (not previously put in the fridge) and...

    Dry hop Question

I have gotten into the process of not using a secondary based on the advice here and I have an IPA fermenting that I want to dry hop. I know that dry hopping is when most people use the secondary, but mine are all full. Can i get the same effect dry hopping in the primary in a mesh bag?
