Corn sugar to boost Imperial stout abv

I've heard you can get some nasty bitter off flavors from the unfermentables when using molasses; was that your experience?

Brewing this II IPA Tomorrow! Thoughts?

I'd drop the Crystal down to .25 lb of each, and replace the MO with 2-row (it would be lost at that small an amount. Then, toss in 8 oz of corn sugar to kick your OG back up, and help dry things out. As for the hops, i'd move the Chinook up to 60, and use the Simcoe for flavour/aroma. Skip...

Corn sugar to boost Imperial stout abv

Go for it. It may thin or dry out your beer a touch, but depending on your recipe, this could be desirable. I suggest rather than corn sugar though, you use something with a little more character, like brown sugar. I did one recently that used about 7%, and the early results are good.

Just read the whole thread, and no mention of D.O.A.???

That is a great deal! I was quoted $87. Same package, with the tank and an upgrade to new 3 gal Cornies. A few bucks more for that, and a bit extra to make it up here, so sounds about right. Now just trying to decide whether to keep brewing and bottling, or hold off a bit to time a few...

    keg connection.com

Thanks for the reply. Actually just heard back from them today, and got my USPS quote, so will place an order shortly. They were very apologetic about being late getting back to me. Hoping it's just indicative of a small company getting bigger and busier faster than planned, rather than...

How was shipping for you, pricewise? I've been waiting for a quote (quite awhile actually...), and hoping it isn't too steep. Did you go USPS? Should mention I'm in Canada, too (Yukon).

    What is this (says taprite)?

Unlikely, considering he's the one who posted it for sale :) I suspect it's for mounting a manifold.

    Beersmith--List hops in order

Neat trick! It's always bugged me that the dry hops are listed first. Thanks! :rockin:

+1, and I hope and think I'll have one under the tree too!

    best place for supplies: Canada

Canadian Homebrew Supplies carries both the Brewer's Best copper wort chiller (which I just received) and the Blichmann plate chiller.

First time botting in Grolsch bottles

The sweetness could be from your priming sugar. I wouldn't worry about steeping for an hour vs. 30 min. I've got a few of the swing tops from Howe Sound Brewing; 1 litre, so they make short work of bottling, and will double nicely as growlers for filling "to go" off my Tap-A-Draft when I...

    best place for supplies: Canada

I ordered mine through Morebeer out of the US. Shipping was via USPS, and was pretty quick and inexpensive. For folks out west, there is a new operation out of Vernon, BC, called Hop Dawgs. Decent selection and pricing.

    Brew smell

I assume you're talking about the smell while you're brewing, not while the beer is fermenting? My wife is the same way. She has a particular disdain for hoppy beers, which are pretty much all I brew. I just try and brew when she's at work or out of town. When that doesn't work out, she just...

Help me name my college homebrew business!

Barley Legal. I can't claim it, as it comes from a (seemingly) dormant web blog from up here in Canada, but the young guys, not to mention some of the older ones, will dig that it sounds like the title of a nudie mag. The rest will just like the pun.

Messed up 3 batches in a row. About to try again.. A few questions.

Here's what I do (got the method from a Canadian homebrew supply website): I fill two smaller pots with about a half gallon of water. I bring one to 150-155, and add my steeping grains. The other I bring to a boil, kill the heat and cover. Meanwhile, I throw 2.5 gallons in my brew kettle (5...

too warm in the fermenter? yeast OK?

I may be wrong, but 26 degrees actually sounds like an ideal pitching temp. What type of yeast was it?
