    Ball valve

Is there any problem using a ball valve labeled for gas and not water on my mash tun? I could only find valves the right size that were labeled 'gas' and after putting it together it seems to work just fine.

    pot size

I have been using a 20 quart enamel pot. So I have been unable to do a boil of the full volume. I am looking to upgrade to a pot that can do the full volume. Would you recommend going the whole 9 yards and getting like a 60 quart pot so that I might be able to do 10 gallon batches in the...

    First all grain complete

I did my first all grain today. I ended up doing an oatmeal stout. Did a batch sparge in my 5 gallon igloo max cold mash tun. Got about 68% efficiency... not that bad for my first attempt I guess. Now I am just waiting for it to start fermenting. Cant wait to taste it. I also used whole...

    Cost of grain

I was wondering what people here generally pay for grain. I have been seeing 50 lb bags of 2 row online for around $50. Today I went to a homebrew store near work and they are selling 50 lb bags for $26.50 I almost wanted to buy 2. I bought smaller amounts of the specialty malts and those...

Can you grow hops from planting one of the whole flowers? Or is it pretty much necessary to get one of the rhizomes?

    My igloo mash tun

Here are some pics of the mash tun I just built. What do you think? Is the stainless steel braid too long? Should I cut it in half or just leave it alone? Any other suggestions?

    Straining hops

What's the point in adding leaf hops at "0 minutes" if you are just going to strain them off before going to the primary? I have seen some recipies like this and it doesnt make sense to me.

    boiling with extract

If you are going to go all grain with a little extract, most people add that extract about 15 mins from the end of the boil. Also, the point of boiling the wort for an hour or whatever is for the hops. Why not do an extract where you boil 5 gallons of water for 60 mins with hops and just add...

    Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

Does anyone have a recipe for a Brooklyn brand East India Pale Ale clone? I just drank one after a few ESB homebrews and the flavor hit me as something I havent quite had before. It can be anything, extract, partial mash, or all grain. Thanks

    cutting stopper holes

Does anyone have a good way to bore a hole in a rubber stopper? I have a stopper that I want to use in a mash tun but the hole is 3/8 and my tubing is 1/2 OD. Also, I want to make a blowoff for a carboy but the hole is again 3/8 and I have 1 inch ID tubing so it needs to be slightly larger...

    tubing from lowes

Hey, I need some tubing for some stuff I am building. I went to lowes and the tubing they sell says "do not use with icemaker" I was wondering if this is because it's not food grade or whatever and shouldnt be in contact with the hot water/wort or if it's just because it's not pressure rated...
