    WTF am I doing wrong??!!!

My question is the same as above. Please clarify how the beer gets from the fermenter into the bottles. If you use a bucket with a spigot, why don't you add the sugar solution to the bucket? It seems like it would be hard to get the same amount of solution in each bottle. Other than that that...

    Pouring Undercarbonated Bottles into Keg?

I had an issue twice with a batch of beer not properly carbonating. Both were higher alcohol beers. The first was a Belgium Tripple. I shook the bottles and moved them to a warmer spot which got the yeast going again. The second time was on a Belgium Quad. The shaking and warmer spot did not do...

    Bottle vs Keg

I bottle in flip-top Grolsch and Fisher bottles. I have a cool basement room with shelving where I store about 400 bottles. Upstairs I have a mini fridge with 4 bottles each of about 12 to 15 different beers. I could not do this if I were kegging. Cleaning bottles isn't the greatest job, but I...

Can I make beer in fermenter whilst wet after cleaning?

I still use bleach for sanitizing my gear. After a short soak I give it all a good rinse with warm water and use it wet. I figure the left-over rinse water is no different than the water I use to top-off the carboy. Patrick

Are there any cyclist in the group?

My wife and I are bicycle travelers. We have some of our journals on Rachel and Patrick Hugens - Member Profile - CycleBlaze Biking is a great way to burn the beer calories.

    Bottle labels

Do you have any labels that wrap around the neck of a Grolsch bottle? I could not find them. Thanks,

How long can I reuse my bottles until I need to start buying a new set?

I am using 30-year-old Grolsch bottles and just bought another batch of old Fisher bottles from a home brewer that is switching to kegging. They will last for a long time as long as you keep them clean.

    Belgium Tripple - low carbonation

An update on my Tripple. I had inverted a couple of bottles to stir up the sediment and put them in a warmer spot for almost two weeks. Yesterday I refrigerated one and we popped it last night. It worked! Good carbonation and a nice head. It definitely is a higher alcohol beer, the flavor is...

    Belgium Tripple - low carbonation

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. This was my first higher ABV beer. I had the bottles sitting in my basement at about 62 degrees so that might be the issue. I moved them to a warmer spot. The beer actually tastes good, just flat. I understand that the secondary isn't much done...

    Belgium Tripple - low carbonation

I brewed a Belgium Tripple extract beer. The instructions called for a two month stay in a secondary carboy which I did. I bottled it about a month ago. After two weeks I popped the first bottle: pretty flat. I popped the second one today about a month since bottling and still find very low...

    Adding LME at 20 minutes

Thanks guys, that explains it. The instructions call for boiling 2.5 gallons. I actually start with 3 gallons and after steeping the specialty grains at 170 degrees for 30 minutes I rinse them under hot water and add about 1/2 gallon of rinse water to the kettle. So I boil about 3.5 gallons of...

    Adding LME at 20 minutes

So brewed a Belgian Tripple extract kit today. The instructions said to add 3.15# of the LME at 60 minutes and 6# LME at 20 minutes. I thought the reason for the 60-minute boil is to convert the malt extract to fermentable sugars, how is that going to work for the 6# that only boiled for about...

    IPA mishaps

I popped the first bottle of this batch last night so it is time for an update. The beer turned out great; a nice IPA with enough hop flavor for my taste. This was my first IPA and the struggle for me was dealing with the hop sediment. After the fermentation was finished I did siphon it into a...

    Trader Joe's Ginger Beer Bottles

I had done a search for "Trader Joe's bottles" and got no hits on them. After I posted my message above though I see that there are already similar threads. Sorry about the duplication. Seems like people have used them successfully and I also see the warnings about over carbonating. I like the...

    Trader Joe's Ginger Beer Bottles

I have a good collection of Grolsch flip-top bottles to store my beer. A friend gave me some Ginger Beer bottles from Trader Joe's and they seem perfect for home brewing. 750ml for two glasses and a porcelain flip-top that seems to take the same size washer as the Grolsch. Has anyone used these...

    New Member in Eagle, ID

Welcome from another extract brewer in Boise. After not brewing for 20 years I picked it back up again and today brewed my 6th 5-gallon batch in two months! That will be it for a while because I bottle and I am out of (grolsch) bottles. Patrick

    IPA mishaps

Thanks. It is fermenting vigorously this morning. The mangled hop times are on me: I re-arranged them to the cooking formula. It was 60 minutes boil for the 2oz, 30 minutes for the .5oz and another 1oz for the final 15min. The half clarifying tablet was for 5min, but did not seem to do anything...

    IPA mishaps

I brewed my first extract IPA today and ran into some issues.... I guess you can say I learned a lot. Previously I have brewed extract Belgium Ales, Stout and Belgium White without issues. The recipe called for 2oz of hops at start of boil, another .5oz at 30 minutes and a final 1oz. at 45...

    rinsing steeping grains

Thanks JugDog and Golddiggie. Yeah, I add the DME after the grains have steeped. It just seemed that the grains still had more to "give" after I removed the bag from the boiling kettle. I just wanted to make sure I was not doing something "wrong", like squeezing.......... :) Patrick
