Accidentally racked into a dirty keg

Cleaned (hot PBW soak + wipedown) a new keg last night, rinsed it well, visually inspected for cleanliness, sealed and stored. Pulled the same keg out tonight, sanitized, and racked my BM Centennial Blonde into it. As the beer got about 3/4 up the inside of the keg I happened to glance inside...

    Propane regulator change

I have a King Kooker turkey fryer that I've been using for good results for my 5 gallon batches, but I can tell it won't be able to boil 10 gallon batches that I want to move up to. It came with a 5psi high-pressure regulator, and the box says its 38,000 BTU. Can I swap the 5psi out for a 10psi...

What happens if you don't get complete conversion?

I have my preboil sample cooling, and I just went and looked at it and there are globules of... something... floating in it. I think it may be starch from the grain? I didn't do an iodine test, and the batch is boiling now. I'm running out to get some iodine while SWMBO keeps an eye on the boil...

    Brewing outside and its cold

I'm new to brewing outside, and this is the first time I've done it when its cold. Its about 24 degrees here outside right now. What adjustments, if any do I need to make to my calculations? I figure the only thing that will probably be affected is my boiloff rate, not sure if I need to plan for...

So I just found a case of beer

in my closet. I was storing 2 cases of my Chocolate Stout that I just bottled for carbonation and discovered a case of beer. I didn't label the bottles so it must have been one of my first batches. Threw a couple in the fridge and we'll play Guess That Beer later.

I really hate to even start this thread

but... do I have an infection? I've RDWAHAHB already, and let it go for a few days now, but its really bugging (ha, bugging, get it?) me. I brewed a Chocolate Stout on Thanksgiving eve. Pitched a vial of White Labs 013 London Ale. This was my first All Grain batch, first stout, and first batch...

So I woke up this morning and couldn't hear my airlock

Yea yea I know, airlock activity is not an indication of fermentation. But when I went to bed last night it was gurgling like a drowning man. Walked over to the carboy and the airlock was empty except for one tiny little drop in the crook of the S-curve keeping a seal. While rushing for my...

Thinking about going AG? Don't be afraid.

I just popped my AG cherry last night, and wanted to post a message for those perusing this forum thinking about going AG. It's easy to read some of the more advanced posts in here and think that AG is really hard and you can't do it. However, those conversations are just that - advanced...

Almost done cooling my first AG batch... couple questions

So my first All Grain batch... Going pretty well so far. :mug: Sorry, I know this post looks really long, but the top is mostly background stats leading up to the two questions at the end. The recipe: Briess 2-Row Brewer's Malt 7 lbs Simpsons Chocolate 1 lb Briess 2 Row Caramel 60 11 oz...

Tasted my Austin Homebrew Blue Moon clone tonight

Nice dense, creamy head, good lacing. Nice and cloudy, the color is slightly light. Doesn't taste anything like a Blue Moon (no spiciness, no orange coming through), but it does taste a lot like Hoegaarden. Unfortunately, I hate Hoegaarden. I'm a little bummed. :( Oh well, up next is an APA.

    Finally ready to bottle!

3 weeks in the primary later and we finally have a stable FG of 1.012! woohoo! :ban:

    Adding flour to a wit

I meant to add a tablespoon of whole wheat flour to my Blue Moon clone during the last few minutes of the boil to ensure cloudiness in the bottle but forgot. Is it too late to boil some water, dissolve flour in it and add it when I rack to secondary or the bottling bucket? Or should I just make...

    Competition Recipe Etiquette?

Hey guys. I've been thinking about entering a brew or two in a competition to get some "professional" feedback on my brewing. What I'm curious about, being a new brewer, is the etiquette of using someone else's recipe in a competition. Is it generally frowned upon? Ask the recipe designer first...

    Temperature making me nervous

Edit: this came out much longer than I intended... Cliff notes are: carboy is about 2* below what my WLP400 wants, should i leave it alone or get a brewbelt and try to position it so it doesnt heat too much and get out of range? Full story below./ So I have my AHBS Blue Moon clone in my 6...

    Pre-boil volume adjustments

Hi all. So I can't do a full boil with my new brewkettle because my stove and grill can't push it to a full rolling boil. I also can't do the recommended 2.5 gallon boil that the recipe I'm using calls for (Austin Homebrew Blue Moon clone) because my new pot is too large to do that little (its...

32qt pot at Target for $24.99

Came across this at Target last week and grabbed one to use as a brewkettle. 32qt aluminum. Its intended to be a tamale steamer but the only thing that makes it a "tamale steamer" is the removable perforated shelf at the bottom, aside from that its just a huge pot. Anyways, at $24.99 it was too...

Effect of boil intensity on final product?

So I got my new brewpot so I can do full boils. I don't have a dedicated propane burner, so i was testing trying to get 6 gallons of water up to a boil on my grill and on my stove. The grill worked (took the grates off and sat the pot on the burner covers), but was very slow - would have taken...

Title that does not start with Greetings From, Welcome From, Hi From, etc

Hello all, Been lurking for a while and decided an intro was in order. My name's Aubrey and I'm from Acworth, Ga. Just getting in to homebrewing, someone finally took a hint and got me a kit for Christmas. Wasn't the kit I asked for (ended up with a Lakeview Valley Farms 1gal kit) but its better...
