    Help needed with Malting Barley

Hello, it's been a while since I posted on the forum. But I've been waiting for some ingredients and now I think I need a little help. I requested help before for barley-less beer making because I live in a place where there is no brewing tradition. So I've been playing with malting corn...

    Gluten Free recipe suggestions

I just found this gluten free beer recipe and procedure. It's useful for me as I can find Quinoa readily, it's not that I need a gluten free beer. However it details the procedure with things to look out for concerning the difference between processing these types of grains and barley malt...

    Gluten Free recipe suggestions

What exactly did you do with the grains? Did you malt them or just take the grain and toast it?

The GaP (Grocery and Produce) Beer Experiment

My oat beers are flopping. In reality all I am trying to do is ferment the starches in the oats. My last batch which I flavoured with ginger tasted of watery ginger without the slightest sign of a head. My ginger ale tasted much nicer. For me it's a big learning curve but I am learning. At my...

    The Non-Malt Challenge

grapes grow well here and I intend to grow my own too. I love wine, and I've already started some plum wine from a basic wine recipe, I tasted it after fermentation prior to first racking and it was nice if a little tart. Other than grapes which are growing in production here, we also have a...

    The Non-Malt Challenge

Zymurgrafi, don't worry, no offence taken, what I meant was the book looked useful enough to purchase. You know I remember having a conversation about beer a few months ago now with a farmer friend and I am sure he told me he has a colleague producing Barley. Will get back to him on that one.

    The Non-Malt Challenge

Zymurgrafi, thanks for the book reference, I'll buy it, it looks very useful. I may be in a 3rd world country but we can still afford books. Well we're not that poor, just underdeveloped. The problem is, the supermarkets sell good produce, BUT it's very limited. So no whole wheat berries that...

    The Non-Malt Challenge

Thanks EvilToj, the barely growing thread is certainly useful.

    The Non-Malt Challenge

Just discovered that barely is rather hardy and suited to challenging conditions. Just need to obtain seed. Will keep you posted.

    The Non-Malt Challenge

It can't be that hard, although we can't grow grass, hmmm I wonder. Well I love this type of challenge and I can't see anything else for it. I have made tentative contact with some homebrewers here through facebook, but my Spanish isn't good enough yet.

    The Non-Malt Challenge

We have a moderate climate though not temperate, too hot for that, but I think Barley has about a 6 to eight week turnover which isn't that much. I think I can grow it.

    The Non-Malt Challenge

Thanks Orfy, I am indeed in Uruguay, but I am originally from Cheshire in England too. Yes growing Barley is definitely on the list. My wife and I are starting to think about growing more of our own produce anyway and I also know a farmer who knows a producer of barley it just occurred to me...

    The Non-Malt Challenge

I'm new to beer brewing. Infact, I've only made ginger beer so far, very nice it is too. However, as I mentioned in my introduction, I live in a third world country that grows barley and uses it to make beer for domestic sales and sells the rest internationally. Non of it ends up in the shops...

    Hello from Uruguay

Yes I am a jazzer, or former jazz guitarist, still playing but not for money these days. OK, I have been using bakers yeast and also I started my own wild yeast for making bread which I am trying BUT the idea of buying some and keeping it alive shouldn't be any more difficult so that is a great...

    Hello from Uruguay

I live in Uruguay, but am in fact English. I'm desperate to make beer but the problem is that I live in a 3rd world country so there is no such thing as a homebrew store or supply and online is tricky and expensive. I'm currently looking at trying alternatives to Barley as I haven't found...
