    Flowers in the mead

It was my first mead so I did not want to over complicate things. I used the entire bag but did not taste any significant bitterness. With some lemon slices in the fermenter it brightened it all up a bit. Maybe the carbonation helped cut any of the bitterness too. I'm far from a mead expert I...

What to do with whey? Lots of flavor there.

We always have a ton of whey from our weekly yogurt batch. I always save it to dump onto garden plants. My tomatos seem to love it. If it's winter I'll dump it over my berry bushes so they have some juice for spring.

Fruit and Spice Beer Lemon Rosemary American Wheat Ale (2nd Best of Show)

Bumping an old thread but I made an extract version of this last month to quickly fill the keg with a summer beer before some guests arrived. Actually first time doing extract since I was brave enough to jump into all grain from the start. Turned out great. 2 gallon batch Yeast US-05 1.5#...

    Hello. New to Mead

Just keep it simple at first and also make a mead that finishes quick so you don't lose confidence or ambition. I made a carbonated heather mead, maybe 8% abv that tastes like a floral champagne, nothing fancy just a nice sparkling drink for summer that I was drinking after a few months

    Flowers in the mead

I did a dry carbonated heather mead as my first mead this year. Started drinking it after 4 months or so it's great. I bought a big bag of dried heather flowers, 2oz from brewers best. If I recall I boiled them for 5-10 like a tea then let them cool down for 30 min to an hour before adding the...

    Clean Bottles

This is true. That is why I always run a light cycle without detergent to clear any gunk out from the previous night before I run my bottles (also no detergent) The heated dry really can't be beat.

    Clean Bottles

After I pour I rinse them with hot water thoroughly immediately. On bottling day 1. PBW Soak for an hour 2. Run light cycle in dishwasher with no detergent. I also rub a cycle before the bottles with the dishwasher totally empty to remove any food gunk. 3. During bottling I dunk them in...

    Mixing Yeast

I don't think it is entirely unheard of. I recall seeing cream ale yeasts that were actually ale/lager yeast combined

Historical Beer: Kentucky Common "Kiss Yer Cousin" Rye Kentucky Common Ale

Here was my take on this. Might be a hybrid between the two KC recipe threads since I use rye like this one but use 6 row and have extra hop additions like the other. 5 gallon batch: 7# (54.9%) 6-row 3# (23.5%) Flaked corn 2# (15.7%) Flaked Rye 6oz (2.9%) Crystal 40 6oz (2.9%) American Black...

American Pale Ale In The Pines West Coast Pale Ale

I brewed this one up with some modifications because I wanted to target a much much lower IBU and I had a bit more rye. First time attempting a 2.5 gallon BIAB stove top batch. Also first time brewing with distilled water and modifying the ion concentration with salts: I think I hit about...

How do you save your cooling water?

I use an aquarium pump in cooler with ice water. I let the first few gallons go into a separate bucket for hot cleaning water then move the return tube to the cooler to create a closed loop.

Altbier Norther German Altbier (Best In Show)

First post: Just cracked one open last night after a minimum 2 weeks fermenting + 2 weeks bottle, it tasted great. My 2nd brew I have ever done. Jumped into all grain using an Anvil Foundry I pitched at 63 F then fermented in a turned off fridge in my garage that was probably fluctuating...
