how soon can i transfer from primary to secondary?

I have left the hops in my batches and let the primary for 2 or 3 weeks before racking to secondary. Two of my hefe batches I did'nt even use a secondary and racked straight to the keg. They came out fine. That being said I've only finished 5 batches so far so take my words with a grain of...

Chimay red mini mash conditioning question

Just got home and checked my notes... OG was 1.078 on 5-16-09. Today I pulled a sample and the gravity reading was at 1.012, a bit lower that the recipe predicts, but not too far off. Recipe predicts 1.019. Color was lighter than I was expecting and even green it tasted pretty good. The partial...

Chimay red mini mash conditioning question

I was under the impression that at kegorator temps, it really slowed down the conditioning. I just want to make room in my fermenting fridge for another batch.:mug:

Chimay red mini mash conditioning question

I have a Chimay red mini mash batch (my first mini-mash) from Austin Homebrew Supply that has been in my primary for about 3 weeks. If it had reached FG, can I skip secondary and keg it now and let it age in the keg? If this is acceptable, how warm can I store the keg for conditioning? My...

    conical fermenters

The seller was very nice in his responce and said he would mail me a new guage ASAP. The construction quality on these is questionable, but you get what you pay for. I'm a little concerned about one of the welds. Will post a pic when I get home from work.

    conical fermenters

Well I got mine in the mail today. I can't really open it up and go through it here at the office. Will post more when I go over it tonight. The packaging reminds me of harbor freight..... Edit 5-29-09 13:20 Opened it up while I was home for lunch. This crappy phone pic doesn't show the...

Thinking of attempting a Trappist Kit from AHS

I started a chimay red mini mash kit from AHS last week. Everyone is right about using a blowoff tube. Mine made a terrible mess before I got a tube setup. This is the 8h day in primary and the lock is still bubbleing away.

    Fermenting music

Yes. The fridge sits on my back porch and this past winter I was having trouble maintaining tempratures. I needed to add a heat source. It works quite well. When things got real cold (down into the 50's) I would run a program to fully load the CPU and generate extra heat. The laptop does not...

    Fermenting music

Everyone has heard about playing music for plants and flowers somehow helping them grow. Has anyone ever heard of anyone trying this with beer? I have a laptop in my fridge as part of my temp control system. Why not have it play music while its doing this? Now, what is the appropriate music...

    What an overwhelming hobby.

Buy two hydromeders. They are very delicate and break often. They are an important tool for knowing what your beer is doing. They are also cheap enough to keep an extra on hand.

    1 week taste test

I just bottled my first batch on sunday. Its the brewers best american nut brown ale extract kit. My fridge is holding at 68 so we'll see how long it takes. I probably won't sample till the second or third week.

can I put potatoes in the primary?

Last night I talked to a guy at the bar who mentioned his grandfather using a potato in his prohibitioin era beer recipe, so your not the only one who has heard this. The family no longer has the recipe but I bet someone here can dig one up.
