    Programming question

I love it...would be easier with a modern drive by wire car, but gack, what a perverse idea. Someone please do it...perhaps old airplane gauges...and maybe a stick shift to change the steps in your brewing process, perhaps using an actual car horn to trigger alarms when some important event...

Blichmann Modular Brewing Stand "Top Tier" (spring 09)

Watch out this will turn into a batch sparge vs. fly sparge or arduino board vs. bcs-460. Money/Time continuum is a challenge that we all have to find our own way through...Your points about the dimensions and other features are good, I suspect that the actual delta in top tier cost vs. parting...

    PID's or Brewtroller?

You could control the pid's sample rate to control how often it looked at the temperature, this would have the net affect of controlling the cycling of the steam valve. Alternatively or additionally you could to control the element in the steam production side as well, perhaps lowering the...

    PID's or Brewtroller?

There is an assumption that the brewtroller is open, so that mean's it's flexible. But that flexibility is presumed, and not that clearly available(IMHO). There is a generally accepted conflict in the world of open source vs. closed source. The open source world is open, but it generally...

    Sorry, what is an RTC?

Oshea brewing co. Minibrew 6.5 gallon conical fermenter (ebay), thoughts on it?

+1 never mind the inefficient space consumption a conical takes compared to carboy's or better bottles. :)

    How do PIDs/SSRs work?

A pid controls a low voltage circuit(typically dc) like 5 volts, not enough to do anything. Except to switch something that can do something(the ssr) which you can get in all manner of capacities rated based on amps/voltage and control voltage(ac vs. dc). The ssr is what allows a low voltage...

Love Dual Stage Temp Controller, question

how much is a love controller? I am only familiar with the Ranco's...

    Critique my beer brewing setup

The other issue with conical's is that they take more space than carboy shaped vessels(i have switched to better bottles from glass before someone gets hurt). I can ferment 8 6 gallon better bottles in the same fridge, that at best could hold a single 14 gallon conical...that might seem like a...

    Stepping with a HERMS

The need to cool your hex would result from a large volume, i only have about 1.5 gallons of water in my entire hot side of my hex, so any contained heat is rapidly absorbed with very little overshoot, plus PID control also avoids overshoot. If you have a giant vessel and differential control...

    Stepping with a HERMS

I would do steam injection if I cared to actually do it...use an old pressure cooker, much more straightforward than building a jacketed MLT, albeit with it's own risks...kaboom...

Using a PID to control a pump in a HERMS setup? A no-no?

My HEX is my convoluted wort chiller(and heater)...it puts some heat across, the x-axis is somewhat difficult to read in this context, each block is 200 seconds(20 10 second samples). The 1300-900 was when i had ALL the mash in buckets OUT OF THE BREWERY...so the temperature probes were reading...

Using a PID to control a pump in a HERMS setup? A no-no?

So i did a somewhat chaotic brew day this sunday, but I still was able to gather some information in regards to HERMS and step mashes. All along the words asymptotic kept coming to mind, and I had had this thought before, but never captured the data...but we will get to that. Initially i got...

Using a PID to control a pump in a HERMS setup? A no-no?

It's "bad" because the enzymes are in solution, you are denaturing(unintentionally) if you have a high return temp, in an extreme case you would be denaturing a lot of them. The number and impact of the denaturing would be something I cannot characterize and would impact different recipes...

Using a PID to control a pump in a HERMS setup? A no-no?

I don't know what your details are, but I was having some issues as well, but I made an effort on the last two brews to really start slow and get the grain bed floating before I started an aggressive circulation. I have a perforated false bottom(stainless steel with the little 3/16th" holes)...

Using a PID to control a pump in a HERMS setup? A no-no?

Good stuff...so i have a herms, and i have done steps in it, although I choose to call them ramps for all the reasons listed above. All i can offer right now is the ability to offer some data at a later point. I use a convolutus cfc for a heat exchanger and a very small volume of water in...

    Inverted HERMS? (iHerms)

What do you mean impossible? I mash out with my herms, i have done "step-mashes" with my herms. There are two challenges as I see it. One is that the temp doesn't JUMP up to the next step, as you are adding heat, my heat additions work out to about 1-1.5F a minute. The second is the...

    Automated brewing

So i have to say, are we really comparing the various systems or has everyone just made up their minds? (btw, if anyone missed my sarcasm in my previous posting, i like stainless steel, high quality brewing equipment, and sanitation is next to fermentation temp in order of import to me, long...

    Automated brewing

Hopefully this doesn't constitute an opinion, but this is exactly why I only build my brew systems out of lead laden brass, cheap plastic hoses that leach weird carcinogenic chemicals and NEVER EVER clean any of my primary fermentors. Think of the savings! :rockin: (this is of course...

    Automated brewing

There are a couple of others that should be put out there: Brew Droid: BrewDroid Brew Master: Product List Brew Magic: Brew-Magic by Sabco I won't weigh in as I feel that I will be deemed impartial, but I will clear up one point about the bcs, there is no iphone or laptop dependency for it...
