    Escarpment Labs - Thiol Libre

Pre-ordered a pack from my flhbs when it was first announced and got around to brewing with it on weds. Have to say this yeast is a beast! According to my pill it has chewed through 6.78% abv in 48 hours with 6.2% of that being in the last 24 hours. The smells coming from the airlock are so...

Oxygen at start of fermentation, pressure fermenting and you.

When pressure fermenting has anyone ever thought to start under pressure with O2 or regular air to give that extra O2 for the initial lag phase for the yeast? I figure it's a win/win. You can start pressurized without having to waste bottled co2 and you are giving some extra oxygen for the...

    That horrible feeling...

When you just kegged a beer you are really looking forward to, but adding it drained the last of your co2 tank and you have to wait two days for the homebrewshop to open to get a refill. Went ahead and bought a second tank so this will be the ONLY time I ever face this dire circumstance.

Wow! I was impressed with my last Verdant Krausen!!!

So I made a best bitter last week which was my first time using verdant. It was the krausen that just would not diminish. As i ended up kegging that beer the same day I was brewing an imperial stout, I decided to just go ahead and rack the stout on top of the yeast cake from the bitter. Thing...

When you are cheap and don’t want to waste your co2 to clean your lines...

This is my ghetto setup for cleaning out my kegs and lines after kicking a keg. First do a full keg of cleaner, then another of starsan and the keg and line are both ready for the next beer. Bike pump with a couple of inches of evabarrier jammed in it provides the pushing pressure.

    Verdant super Krausen

Day 8 of fermentation. Yeast has pretty much completely flocculated from in the beer and it is starting to clear very nicely, but there is still a great Krausen at least an inch to and inch and a half thick on top. I’m marveling at the beauty of it. Have upped the temp with a heat pad in...

Starting my fast and loose keezer

Started on my fast and loose keezer today. Fast and loose because I don’t have all the right tools and care more about function over form. Found some vinyl planking discarded near my house so grabbed a few planks. Measured and cut to fit my 5 cubic foot freezer. Didn’t bother gluing it to the...

    Happy International Stout Day!

In Celebration here are pictures of the various stouts I currently have in my beer fridge. I have a selection of examples from local craft breweries. For homebrew I have a ris on tap, a milk stout on tap and a choclate raspberry sour milk stout in bottles. Let’s see what stouts you have on hand!

Will it be a kegerator or a keezer???

I just went and picked up a small (5 cubic foot) freezer... was trying to decide if I would be using it as a keezer or a fermentation chamber. After I got it home and unpacked I found a cool feature on it that has pretty much made me decide to use it as a keezer, though the feature now has me...

    FIAK hacks for oxygen-free fermenting

Thought I would share my hacks to go from start of ferment through kegging without introducing any extra oxygen and minimal costs. I bought the ferment in a kettle kit for my anvil 5.5 kettle. I first started thinking about doing havks to keep oxygen out while using the spigot after fermentation...

Stuck fermentation, can I just leave it?

So this is my first attempt at mead. I have what appears to be a stuck or ridiculously slow fermentation. Started it march 3rd, using 71b and it had an og of 1.12. Checked on it a month later, it was at 1.064. Checked on it again two weeks later, and it was at 1.054. At this point i racked to...
