in general, should secondary temps be same as primary?

That is what I figured. I only racked it to secondary because I wasn't sure what ill affects the trub will have on the beer if it sits on it for too long. I just wanted to give it some time to clear also. Thanks for letting me know the temps aren't that big of a concern.

in general, should secondary temps be same as primary?

Just put my obsidian stoute clone (oatmeal stout) in to secondary and I realize our house temp is about 5 degrees warmer than what it was the past couple of weeks. In general, what temps should I keep my stout at while in secondary? Is it as important to keep a consistant temperature while...

first attempt at a clone: Obsidian Stout

Anyone with thoughts on primary taking longer than 3 weeks?

    High FG on stout

That is a bit high. I am currently brewing an obsidian stout clone (Og 1.075 and expected FG of 1.025) but mine is currently still bubbling away 3 weeks later, currently at 1.018, so I am on the opposite end of your situation with my FG being lowered than expected. what yeast did you use?

first attempt at a clone: Obsidian Stout

ok, here we are at about 3 weeks after I started primary and there is STILL activity in my airlock. Tested gravity last week and it was spot on, and it has continued to bubble ever since. I can say that when I first started primary, temps in our house were around 70-73 but now they are around...

    Starter from commercial beer

ok, so a noob question here. Once you get a starter, what do you do with it? Do you add more yeast to your starter or just use that alone?

first attempt at a clone: Obsidian Stout

Good thing I left it in primary. Not sure if temps are cooler in my house, or opening the bucket shook it up a bit, but since Saturday the airlock has been bubbling pretty consistently again. I think I will wait a few more days and see what the hydrometer reads at. question: when a recipe...

first attempt at a clone: Obsidian Stout

No, the sample tasted quite fine though. Its still in the primary bucket, as I have been too lazy to transfer it to the carboy for a secondary. I might just keep it in the primary another week and bottle it up after that. I did notice a bit more activity though on the airlock today, so I will...

first attempt at a clone: Obsidian Stout

Found a recipe on here (linked to a different site) for an extract brew of a favorite beer of mine that unfortunately is not sold near me: Obsidian Stout by Deschutes Brewery. Here is the recipe that I used: Obsidian Stout A Northwest favorite from Deschutes Brewing. It's not too robust...

Am I understanding these directions correctly?

So after I steep the grains, do I just remove the bag and squeeze out what I can from it and toss it? No need to sparge it? Would I not get a better OG if I try to extract as much as I can from the grains, or is this recipe figured to have enough just be removing the grains and not sparging them?

Am I understanding these directions correctly?

I found this recipe for a clone and the directions are slightly different from the kits I usually buy, so I want to make sure I would be doing this correctly. Here is the recipe: ********************************************************** Obsidian Stout A Northwest favorite from Deschutes...

    Black and Tan Q's

I always thought it had to do with Guinness using nitrogen/C02 mix and other beers using C02. The nitrogen being lighter than C02, it stays on top of the "heavier", more dense beers.

last bottle only 3/4 filled. will it carb?

This weekend I bottled my 5 gallon batch and in doing so, I only had enough to fill the last bottle about 3/4 of the way (in a standard 12oz bottle). I would say it filled just to the bottom of where the neck starts, so a pretty huge head space. I figured that if I do let it sit at room...

    Lagering my first bock!

This is my first lager. I have written a half dozen posts already about it, pretty much about every step along the way so far. I think I have over-thought the process far too much after reading too many threads here. i have decided that I most likely wont kill the beer and whatever I take...

2 ?'s. plastic bottles and lager ferm. temps

thanks both of you for replying. Any other thoughts on what to do with a lager if it has been removed from the fermenting temps of 50 degrees, and has finished fermenting? is it ok to leave at room temperature for an indefinite amount of time, or should it be put back at colder temps until...

2 ?'s. plastic bottles and lager ferm. temps

I feel stupid for asking this, but here goes. 1. I have reached FG in my Bock type of Lager. Just a few days shy of a month in Primary at 50-55 degrees and the last 4 days at room temperature to finish it off. I don't have the setup to lager it in a secondary carboy, so I will bottle...

    bock fermenting. took sample. advice?

It has been almost 3 weeks now in primary. The FG reading I took last night was 1.018, which is close to the 1.012-15 FG. My OG was on the higher end of the given range, so I am going for 1.015 as my FG. i moved the primary to a warmer area in our house (about 68 degrees) and plan on...

    bock fermenting. took sample. advice?

9 days into my primary fermenting of my "yummy bock" type of lager, I opened up the bucket and withdrew enough of a sample to check for gravity. Here are some concerns or comments that hopefully can be answered, and alleviate me of any further overthinking. 1. OG was 1.060. I checked the...

bottling: how much airspace is ideal?

The kit I bought has the bottling wand and that just makes it the perfect way to bottle. 1. fills from the bottom of the bottle up, so as to not introduce too much oxygen (air) into the bottle. 2. as said above, fill with the wand to the bottle of the bottle. when the beer reaches to just...

    Naturally Carbonated Lager

Not to hijack the thread, but my extract kit recipe was titled "yummy bock" and it seems to be a shiner bock clone as someone else had said. 1.060 OG
