How much head space for aging?

Yeah i generally try to keep things into the neck after fermentation is complete, but I'd read of people just leaving cider in the original fermenter until completely complete, so I wasn't sure if I should top it off or not. Thanks for the feedback.

How much head space for aging?

I'm helping my son-in-law make a batch of cider (great experience, BTW). I've only done one batch before myself, several years ago. I thought we had enough juice in the 6 gallon carboys to fill a 5 gallon with enough left to at least have a sip... But no. One of them is about half way...

    Scaling up

I saw reference to that on PB, will check that out as an option as well. One advantage I have is that I already own property and a building that would probably work very well for a brewery - even one larger than I really envision, so that is one hurdle that might be bypassed. Maybe I just...

    Scaling up

Great ideas. It makes sense that there are classes, but I wasn't aware of them. Will definitely check them out. We do have a few craft brewers around too, and if I decide that this is a viable option will see about getting some practical experience. Thanks!

    Awesome, thanks!

    Scaling up

Not sure where to put this, or if it's actually appropriate on an HB forum, but this is the only place I know... I've been home brewing for a few years and really enjoy the process and results. I have run my own (non-beer related) business for many years and it has been quite successful...

    Grain storage container size

I use "pet food" conatiners: Air-tight and rolls around nicely on the wheels. Holds about 50-55# (a 55# may not fit, depending on the grain). Available at Amazon for $25 including shipping if you have a Prime account. From a previous thread, there is a chance there may be weevil eggs...

    Finished my Counterflow Chiller

How do you get the inner piece of tubing through the fitting for the outer hose? Isn't there usually a stop so you can't over insert the pipe?

    All grain indoors in winter?

My point was that a device UL Listed for non-vented interior use (gas range) potentially produces twice as much CO as a turkey fryer.

    All grain indoors in winter?

I'm sure it's not a great idea to use a turkey fryer indoors. But. A Viking range can put out well over 100,000 BTUs with all the burners on (126,500 for this one). Does a turkey fryer not burn as clean or something?

Why are none of my beers finishing fermentation?

So you've been using a refractometer for eight years and your beer has been fermenting down near 1.010? If so, then you do definitely have a problem with your process/fermentation. However, as others have pointed out, a refractometer cannot be direct read once there is alcohol in the mix. I know...

From grain to glass in 10 days?

http://www.probrewer.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=15572 First few replies suggest that 10 days is too quick, but there are quite a few guys that say 10 days is plenty. Of course, these are guys that make beer as a more of a science than an art, i.e. everything is repeatable.

    100 percent efficiency?

    That means you had an efficiency of about 79%. Good, but not 100%. .042 / (((4.5 * .035) + (4.5 * .036)) / 6) = 79.2%

    Couple of mashing questions

If your crush is not fine enough, ask them to run it through twice (or just do it if it's self serve).

First all-grain batch process - sanity check please

Just personal observation - things usually go better if you wait until the yeast is pitched before you RDWHAHB...

    100 percent efficiency?

According to Beersmith, if you used 4.5# each Flaked Wheat and Pale Malt you would need to end up with 6 gallons at 1.053 OG in the primary. I suspect one of three things: Incorrect weight of grain, or Incorrect final measure, or Incorrect hydrometer reading.

I'm thinking I may quit using brew software

I don't think that doing recipes longhand makes you a better brewer any more than using a car to get to work makes you a better employee. As many have already said, software is a tool. A tool by itself doesn't make you better or worse at what you're doing, it's what you do with it or how you use...

I am not intimidated by all-grain!

It may well cost you $500 to get set up for 11 gallon batches. But if you can settle for the more typical 5-6 gallon you can do it pretty cheap as others have mentioned. If you don't have anything you could do it for under $200 pretty easily.

    Never calculated effeciency.

d'oh! All this time I've just been fiddling with the "Brewhouse Efficiency" number until the "expected OG" agreed with what I got. Never realized that was a button! :rockin:
