Advanced brewing mistakes - not so obvious

Using brewing sotware (Beersmith 3 for me) and printing out the brew day sheets and then following them is what helps keep me on track with process. The sheets also help me to remember to take all the quality control measurements along the way.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

No scorching. Turn down the power to 40-60% during mash. I do get a build up on the bottom that comes off with Powdered Brewery wash (PBW) soak and a green 3M scrub. PBW works much better than oxyclean.

    Grain Mill question...

This happens to me since I use a very fine gap .030" ish for biab in my 2 roller mill. I typically put some grain in the hopper and then manually rotate the rollers to get some grain in the rollers. The second roller will only spin if there is grain between the rollers. If it stops working in...

Beer rapidly changing in the keg

Do everything you can to minimize cold side oxidation and you will be happier with your NEIPAs. You might also research using metabisulfites to scavenge oxygen. Works for me.

    Original Gravity Low

Best thing I ever did was start using a brewing software and learned how to use it (this is important) . I use Beersmith 3. Now a lot of folks use Brewfather. BS3 prints out a brew day recipe and has places for you to record all the bits of data you need to input into the software to know...

Your experience with electric brewing systems?

My experience is similar but I don't have as much variance in the mash Temps because I typically do full volume biag without the malt pipe (just a false bottom). If you measure the temperature of the wort coming out of the recir pump tube you will find it matches the the display actual temp...

Your experience with electric brewing systems?

Like many others I have the Anvil 10.5g. I do biab just like I did in my 15g biab Propane system. I don't use the malt pipe or the include chiller. You will get less efficiency. I get 74% bhe about 10 points less than the Propane system. Best I can tell is mainly a function of the boil off...

Issues with slow end of frementation with BIAB method

The larger mesh is letting grist particles in to the wort. The particles can adheare to the CO2 and you will see what looks like an Extended fermentation. I've dry hopped without a bag and have seen this happen to me. I thought the fermentation was going on for weeks. When I realized the sg...

    50% OFF for Inkbird INK-WP01 Wi-Fi Smart Plug — Only $5.49 {Reg $10.99}

Never was sent a code. Was first asked to purchase at full price and then I could submit for a 50% refund. I didn't like that option. The alternative was I was asked to send a picture of the amazon webpage which I did and no answer. Glad others were able to get a code.

    BIAB low efficiency help

I second the posts around getting your own mill. I set my rollers to a credit card thickness and typically get 85% efficiency with squeezing the bag. I also typically don't stir the mash or if I do, stir it at 30 minutes. Question, do you insulate your pot during mash? You could be losing...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Imo, a major source of cold side oxidation is the cold crash. As the beer gets cold, the beer volume shrinks and O2 is sucked into the fermenter. I use a mylar balloon (credit to Marchall Schott - 7 methods for reducing cold-side oxidation when brewing) inflated with co2 connected to the...

    Hydrometer and reusing wort

Cloudy is expected. I've never had clear post boil wort. The clearing happens after fermentation from either time, fining with geletin (recommended - google it), and or cold crashing. I run my grain mill very fine. A lot of the grain after grind is almost flour like and my efficiency is...
