    BIAB and heating element

Lol, unless you happen to have a 15 amp 240v tablesaw outlet right next to your workbench/brew table! Worked great for my Advantco, before I switched to a 10gal Blichmann w/boil coil and Brew Commander for my BIAB.

Opinions wanted on brewing system choice

I used a ssBrewtech and an Anvil kettle.

Opinions wanted on brewing system choice

Before I got into and even after all grain BIAB I used a 240v Advantco induction burner with both a 5.5 and 7.5 gal kettle. I brewed in my garsge. Great for extract kits, LME, and eventually used it for my entry into all grain BIAB. Something to consider. I still use that same 240v circuit for...

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

I'm not having any issues at all with mine. I'm using it on a Blichmann 10 gal kettle with 220v boil coil element. I do run my whirlpool during my mash in BIAB as it keeps the grain bed moving as well as keep the temps from stratifying. I've double checked the readings with a digital probe with...

    Apera Instruments PH60 PH meter

you get a starter set of calibration and storage solution, but it won't last long. I bought a pint of each and it should last a while. Calibration is simple and easy instructions to follow. Yes I calibrate on each use.

Just Bought Stainless Steel Table, What to Use Beneath HLT, MT and BK?

I bought the Ss Brewtech trivet and love it.

BrewCommander - Impressive offering from John

You're right about the volume being a factor in the step mash settings in the Brew Commander. I really only step mash my Witbier recipe and typically only brew 2 batch sizes 2.5-2.75g or 5-5.5 g. I have to change those ramp times in the BC for those volumes but its no big deal. Its certainly...

    eBrewing and recirculation (Ss Brewtech)

A ULWD element makes a big difference in BIAB. I run my boil coil during mash with the bag resting on the coils and it doesn't scorch the bag or the grain. Full volume BIAB is a thin mash and so works well with my whirlpool port and riptide pump to keep the grainbed moving and fairly even temp...

    eBrewing and recirculation (Ss Brewtech)

My bag sits on my boil coil element in my 10g kettle but there is still some variation in heat from bottom to top of mash. I don't recirculate but I have a whirlpool port mounted above the element coils that I run during mash and this keeps the thin mash moving and helps with a more uniform...

Where did you get your bag?

You're absolutely correct. Those straps work well for me since I have 10ft ceiling in the garage and use a locking hoist the has a release string. I also like the straps as I fold them over the kettle sides and run a nylon string around and through them and tie it off. Keeps the bag from...

Where did you get your bag?

I use the Brew Bag and really like it for the strap loops when I attach it to the hoist pulley.

Ever get snags lifting the grain bag?

I used to slip a small piece of hi temp hose over my temp probe which worked great to prevent snagging, but when I went to the Brew Commander it has a blunt tipped temp probe, which is great for BIAB.

BIAB Disadvantages to go with the Advantages thread.

Depends on the heat source. I added heat when i used induction cooktop with no ill effects, and since then upgraded to Blichmann ULWD boil coil and I run my heat the entire mash with the bag resting on the coil and it does not scorch or burn.

    Apera Instruments PH60 PH meter

I just put mine in for 30 seconds or so to calibrate, otherwise it stays in the storage solution. Maybe i missed something in the instructions but i dont get the purpose of a 4 hour test. At any rate mine has been flawless and so easy to use. I dont use it every time i hrew but do spot checks...

    MIAB - Sparge or Squeeze?

+1 on @LittleRiver method! I used to squeeze but not sparge as that is way awkward using a hoist. I lift and drain for about 20 minutes before starting my boil. I usually get lunch and cup of coffee while draining since I'm retired and in no hurry. I just do a single crush to credit card mill...

    IPA Dry Hop or not?

It will be fine either way. For a while i was just doing just big whirlpool additions to my pales, and those were good beers no question, but because of the way hops fade, I have returned to dry hopping 6 days before bottling and agree with the others that it does give a nice boost.

First time with Barley Crusher and BIAB

I set my BC to a credit card thickness. I get a nice crush even on wheat kernels. I just crush once thru and my numbers hit close enough in Beer Smith. I've tried a double crush but ended up with more flour than i cared for. You'll enjoy having a grain mill and being able to store and have grain...

Adding 120V to blichmann G2 kettle

I upgraded last year and never expected to go Blichmann, but when they came out with the Brew Commander, it was a fit for my existing 240v 20 amp circuit in the garage. So, I went from a 240v induction burner to a new system with the 10 gal 240v kettle w/boil coil 3750w and the Brew Comnander...

High Gravity, Clawhammer, Unibrau, Brew Boss automation - Programmable Steps?

I can do that with my Brew Commander. It has the timer and programmable mash steps and 9 storable programs. I step mash my Wits, but mostly do pale ales. It's not as sophisticated as some of those controllers but it suits my single vessel BIAB and you can get it in 120v or 240 v. I use the 240v...

    Equipment for BIAB

I'm good with 10 gal size kettle and when, though rare, I want a bit higher gravity I keep a few of those 3.3lb canisters of LME in the fridge. Very easy and convenient to take a 1.056 batch of BIAB and after mashing ratchet that gravity right on up. Using Beer Smith its easy to fit into the...
