    Bottle exploding

Friend of mine has couple older Belgian ales in bombers sitting in her basement. Two of the bottles exploded last week during a storm. We think maybe the air pressure change during stormy weather caused the explosion. Has anyone heard of something like that happening before? I'd think the...

    Hello From PA

Hahaha, you're right! I wish my girlfriend was more into beer BUT she is 100% supportive of my brewing and beer tasting/drinking; that is more than enough for me! She likes lambics so one day I'll have to figure out how to make it for her, hopefully soon!

    Hello From PA

Hi Guys! Love your blog! Good to see fellow beerheads from PA! I'm in Drexel Hill, Delaware County. Just started homebrewing few weeks ago and absolutely love it. I've been a long time beer geek and finally made the jump into brewing. Check out my blog and social network (links in...

    uneven mash temp

Good point, I have the thermometer wire in silicone tubing (found this tip in the equipment forum, works like a charm!), the tubing is rated up to 500 degrees. The strike temp is 175 per BeerSmith which I found to be too warm, during my 2nd batch I had to chill the mash because it was in the...

    uneven mash temp

Hi, I brewed 3 all grain batches so far and they have been progressively getting better. One challenge I'm facing is the temp variations of my mash. I use two thermometers; one floating and one digital (with a steel probe) to monitor it. Depending on where each thermometer is in the mash I...

    explain to me: mashing temps!

If I could just chime in regarding Dave's book... as a new (all grain) homebrewer I found that Dave Miller's book was the most valuable to me. I think mainly because all the other books concentrate too much on extract brewing in the simplest form while I was looking for something with a bit...

AMAZING PRICE on 50' Immersion Chiller!!

I bought 2 chillers on Ebay from this guy: http://shop.ebay.com/nybrewsupply/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340 and I have been extremely happy with its quality. I actually asked him to make me a 66 foot pre-chiller and customize the 55 footer (needed the risers shortened few...

    SMaSH question

I'll be doing a SMaSH brew with Maris Otter and one hop (haven't decided which one yet). So I'm trying to build this out in BeerSmith but there isn't such a "style" of beer listed in the styles section (whatever that may be ultimately). When you add a recipe BeerSmith wants a style picked...

    Dry run, configuration and tuning?

Hey All, I'm getting ready to do my first batch (all grain) next weekend. I've assembled a pretty good all grain system (3 tier gravity flow, with 50ft immersion chiller and 66ft pre-chiller) and besides for few small items I'm about 98% ready to go right now. What I wanted to do is do a "dry...

    Need Sanke spear/draw tube

I'm right outside of Philadelphia, PA. I'd be willing to pay for the parts + shipping. Wouldn't mind getting a spare or two if you had more than one set. thanks! J

    Need Sanke spear/draw tube

I have a 1/2 barrel Sanke Keg that came with no valve and no spear/draw tube, basically it was opened and had the insides removed. Does anyone know where I can get replacement draw tube and valve? Seems like plenty of places carry the springs and such but I can't find the rest of the parts...

Do I Need Teflon Tape for my Brew Kettle?

I highly recommend you use teflon. Some of those ball valves are not threaded properly which will ruin your pot, especially if you don't use teflon. It happened to me.

    All grain without a cooler?

Hi, Is it really necessary to use a cooler? How about an insulated pot instead? I realize a cooler will hold temperature better but the only way to raise temp if it falls is to add more hot water. With a pot you just heat it up. I know the most temp you'll loose is maybe 2-3 degrees, for...
