    Grain to water ratio

Hey all, I know this is something that comes up often, but wanted to still post here. Will be brewing a summer shandy style beer BIAB and am going to try to make a five gallon batch of beer with a goal of 8% - 8.5% Abv and then will add five gallons of lemonade from Costco in the keg. I want to...

    Coffee/sweet/oatmeal stout

Hey all, Throwing together a 5 gallon recipe based on Northern Brewer’s sweet stout recipe. I typically stick to recipes on websites but wanted to tweak their recipe a little to give more coffee notes while balancing the roasted barley with Caramel 40L, flaked oats, and lactose. I would...

    Pond pump in cold creek

Hey everyone, I am currently living at a home where I am unable to connect my wort chiller to a sink or hose like I’ve done in the past. There is a creek that has clean, fresh water at a nice current (in Northern Michigan). I would like to brew but want to make sure I can chill the wort in an...

Chilling wort - outdoor winter brewing

Just moved and upgraded to a propane burner to brew outside. I live in Northern Michigan, where temps are pretty cold, and I need to figure out how I am going to chill my wort. I obviously can’t use the outdoor hose, and in my mind my current options are hooking a hose to the kitchen sink...

    NEIPA/Citrusy/Fruity Hops to grow

Looking to grow some hops that could eventually be used in a NEIPA, or fruity tasting IPA. Just started growing hops last summer and had centennial, cascade and chinook. I know I can’t get my hands on any citra, Amarillo, or mosaic to grow, but any suggestions on what I could grow that might be...

Wyeast Scottish Ale Yeast - OG = 1.087... do I need more yeast?

Hey everyone, Just brewed NB’s 3 gallon BIAB BBA Porter. Ended up with an OG of 1.087 for the 3 gallons I yielded. I pitched the Wyeast Scottish yeast, but am afraid that the OG is too high for this yeast and could result in a high FG. I have 2 packs of US-05 in my fridge in case of...

FG too high after 4 weeks - what do I do?

I brewed a toasted coconut oatmeal stout a little over 4 weeks and am having trouble with lowering my final gravity. Here’s the recipe: 4 GALLON COCONUT OATMEAL STOUT BIAB (7/2/19) (90 minute mash) 6 pounds “special pale” 1 pound flakes oats 1/2 pound Biscuit 1/2 pound Caramel/Crystal 60L 1/2...

LOW OG w/London Ale Yeast 1318

Just brewed a NEIPA for the first time. Target OG was 1.061, and unfortunately I hit 1.046. I attribute the low OG possibly to starting out with too much water. I’m pretty frustrated with it, but it is what it is and I still have hope the beer will taste fine. I pitched with London Ale Yeast...

WLP 007 for NEIPA.... YES or NO?

Just bought ingredients for a 3 gallon NEIPA BIAB recipe. Super stoked. However, I could not find the well-liked London Ale 1318 yeast option and I instead purchased the WLP 007. Will this yeast be alright to use for a NEIPA or should I go out and get a different kind of yeast? Still a newbie...

Wide Variety of Hops - Recipe help?

My brother gave me 5 random 1 ounce packets of cheap hops from the homebrew store - Australian Helga, Australian Sylva, German Select, German Herkules, and Summit. I have no idea what to brew and would appreciate some guidance on what I could make with any combination of these. I am open to...

Dry Hopping - NB Fruit Bazooka

Hey all, Two days ago I brewed Northern Brewer’s Fruit Bazooka NEIPA. I followed the instructions to a T and my OG was spot on (1.064). My yeast was also Omega OYL-200. The instructions, however, are a bit weird based on what I’ve learned about brewing so far. Below is the hop schedule, per the...

Looking for fruit to go with fermenting pale wheat ale

Hey all, Almost two weeks ago I brewed a 5 gallon extract pale wheat ale. I want to add fruit to some of it but I’m not sure what would work best with this style. I have done a raspberry wheat ale and everyone loved that, but I am not sure if raspberry would work with this particular style as...

    Making Sweet Cider for Beginners

Hello all, I recently bought a gallon of freshly pressed apple cider from a local Cider Mill at a Farmer’s Market. It has no preservatives and from my research seems to be perfect for hard cider. I have US-05 that i was originally planning on using for an amber ale, but now i am thinking i...

BIAB - 7.5 Gallon pot on stovetop

Hey all, I just received a 7.5 gallon pot as a gift and I was also given a 5 gallon all grain kit for an Amber Ale. I know that a larger pot size is strongly encouraged, but I want to find a way to make this 5 gallon batch work as BIAB with this 7.5 gallon pot. 1. Would I be able to mash full...

Adding honey during secondary - increases ABV?

Hey all, Still new to this whole brewing thing. A week ago I brewed a pale ale and my OG was only 1.030 when it was supposed to be 1.043. Since the intended ABV was supposed to be 4.5% and since I am guessing it'll now be around 3%, would adding honey during secondary or as a late addition to...

    Low OG after boil

Hey all, I tried my first BIAB recipe and decided on a mosaic pale ale from my LHBS. The expected OG was 1.043 and after letting the wort cool and topping off with cool water to hit 3 gallons, my OG was 1.025 or so. I shook the fermenter vigorously for almost 5 minutes, took another...

    Lower FG than expected?

Still new to homebrewing, and I recently brewed a 5 gallon wheat extract beer. I followed the recipe to a T on brew day and let it sit for 2 weeks to ferment. The expected OG was 1.046 and it was right on the money. I added 5 pounds of raspberries and let it sit for another 2 weeks. Just...

    Bubbling but no foam

My cider is long past its active fermentation, but I noticed that despite the airlock bubbling there was never any foam. Is that a problem if there's no foam, or is it just weird because it's a cider and I used apple juice for a cheaper option?
