Difference between oxygen absorbing caps and regular ones?

I brew IPAs and Double IPAs (extract mainly) and tend to start drinking them two weeks after bottling. Most are at least 6% ABV or greater. So what's the deal with the oxy absorbing caps? Do I need them? Do you use them? What are the pros and cons of each?

All grain recipe, missed target OG. Should I add yeast energizer?

Thanks, I'll leave it as is. As for why I missed my numbers... I did have quite a bit of turn that I left in the kettle so I did have more than 4.25 galllons total. But could the reason I missed my numbers be because I mashed st too high of a temp? Mash temp was supposed to be 153, but I...

All grain recipe, missed target OG. Should I add yeast energizer?

I brewed my first Amber Ale all grain BIAB from a recipe I picked up at my LHBS. The target OG was 1.064-1.068, but my batch missed the mark and I'm at 1.058. I'd prefer higher gravity if I can get it. I brewed this batch on 9/4 and it has been in primary fermenter since. There is no more...

    Overflowing bottles

Bottles were just put in the freezer for an hour to chill them, I have them in a dark cabinet conditioning and just took one out to try it and opened it at after an hour in the freezer. The kit that was put together had pre measured everything and I just used the entire package of priming sugar...

    Overflowing bottles

I brewed a centennial ipa extract kit put together by my LHBS. I let it ferment for three weeks and bottled it 10 days ago. I cracked two open tonight and the bottles overflowed for a good two minutes as soon as the cap was off. Did I use too much priming sugar? Will this affect the flavor...

    First BIAB, need help!

I've brewed several batches of extract with good results and decided to step up my game, so I ordered some more equipment (16 gallon brew kettle with false bottom, spigot, etc) and decided I'm all in on this hobby. So now I'm ready to brew my first BIAB and have some newbie questions and I'd...

    Questions for First BIAB

Hi all, I've done 6 batches of extract brew and decided to try something a little more advanced and wanted to do a BIAB. First question... I picked a recipe from a LHBS and it includes 12.25lbs of grains. How much water should I use to start? The recipe is for a 5.5 gallon batch. also...

Extract brew is sitting in secondary dry hopping. Is there a way to clarify it?

By gelatin do you mean something like Sure Gel or jello gelatin? Does that affect the taste or consistency of end product?

Extract brew is sitting in secondary dry hopping. Is there a way to clarify it?

I just bottled my third batch today, it's a witbier. It sat in primary for 17 days and when I bottled it it was cloudy, like muddy water. My batches before this I had moved to secondary after a week and they were also cloudy. Right now I have a Centinial IPA clone extract that I brewed 17...

Transition from extract to all grain. What's the difference in end product?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but as a new brewer I'm wondering what the advantage is to going all grain. I've watched YouTube videos on it and the process is much more complicated (or seems to be) and you need more equipment. I've done 5 extract brews (two are currently in the fermenter)...

    Question about cleaning fermenters

So after a batch is it necessary to clean with PBW or Oxiclean or can I just use soap and water to clean the buckets before next use? Then starsan them before pouring in my cooled wort?

Newbie question - Sanitizing reconditioned bottles in dishwasher?

My main concern is the water that was in the bottles for three weeks in storage. When I pulled them out and dumped them some had a light brown color which made me think they may have had some mold or bacterial growth in the bottle. Will starsan kill and sanitize them if there was mold in the...

Newbie question - Sanitizing reconditioned bottles in dishwasher?

First off I want to say thank you to everyone at this forum, you guys are great and have helped me start to learn this craft and I am very appreciative. This site is such an amazing resource for beginners like me. I'm bottling the second batch I've ever done, it's high ABV double IPA extract...

Newbie question about hitting ABV with extract kit

Good advice. 8% is about where I prefer my beer, especially my IPA. Since this has such a wide range I just want to get it on the high end and was looking for tips.

Newbie question about hitting ABV with extract kit

Thank you for the detailed response. So the kit came with a small 11.5g (0.41 oz) pack of dry yeast. Should I go by the brew store tomorrow and get more? Is there a disadvantage to pitching 2 packs of yeast vs the 1 pack it calls for?

Newbie question about hitting ABV with extract kit

Apparently BIAB doesn't stand for "beer in a box" which is what I meant. I was told the correct term is "extract kit." Edit by doug293cz: I changed the thread title so that it is no longer misleading.

Newbie question about hitting ABV with extract kit

New brewer here, prepping to begin my second batch after sub par results on my first batch. This is Brewers Best Double IPA Beer in a Box. The recipe is in the image below, but I'll also write it out here in the text. Basically what I want is a higher ABV beer and this recipe says that the end...

New brewer here, just completed my first batch and have questions.

So if I'm understanding correctly... the taste will be fine, the only thing that will be off is the volume (4.25 gallons instead of 5) and the abv will be lower than the original recipe cited? Other than those two factors everything will be fine (assuming no contamination of course)?
