    Hard Cider

Thanks for sharing this Recipe! I'm headed to the LHBS this afternoon to pick up the yeast, nutrient, and acid wash, then costco for the sugar and juice, and then I'm off to brewing. This sounds really exciting.

American IPA MY 60 minute IPA

Robbie, If there's one thing that's made my beer better, it's the fermentation temperature. I'm in a small apartment, so I thought cooling would be impossible, but I've kept my most recent beer at 65 degrees for a week now with just sitting in a tub of water with a towel wrapped around the...

    Bells Oberon Clone

Thanks for the extract recipe, however when I plug it into beersmith, it comes up with TOTALLY different end results than what the hopville calculator came up with in the above post. Beersmith gives: OG: 1.067 FG: 1.015 Estimated Color: 9.6 IBUs: 35.3 ABV: 6.8% Any thoughts? I tried...

Swamp Cooler: How cold is too cold?

To the original post: I don't think you'll get much more than a 10 degree pulldown with that setup, so you won't overchill the brew. I used to do the bucket with frozen bottle method, but it was always a PITA and never worked because we used to leave the temps at 78 24/7. This year in a...

What size immersion wort chiller should I use?

I don't think anyone would recommend under 25ft of 1/2" copper tubing for a 5g batch, though many/most homebrewers probably don't use a wort chiller at all (I'm talking about those not as "in the know" with internet forums and such). I've been using my kitchen sink, and am thoroughly displeased...

    Warm room remote temp.

You could also look into a small aquarium controller. Sounds pretty crazy, but I'm in this hobby as well as that hobby, and they've just released some controllers for under $100 that can track temperature, measure pH, control heating/cooling elements, all that stuff in a small digital computer...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

So then I should just stick with traditional crappy cooling method for now? I'm not worried about the non-food-graded HDPE, but the sealing mechanism is a valid issue. It's non-vented, so there is only one in and out, but the new drain. I just wonder how much of an issue oxidization is...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

So I'm relatively new around here, and still doing extracts with steeping grains, but I'm intrigued by this method. I'm actually brewing right now a Sea Dog Blueberry Wheat clone that was supposedly from BYO, using steeping grain and extract. I'm planning on going the no-chill route, since it's...

American IPA MY 60 minute IPA

Great recipe! I'm going to try it out as my next batch I think. I just made a sorta-kinda-LHBS-suggested DFH 90 minute clone that we kind of formulated in store on the fly, so I'm excited to try a DFH clone recipe that has been tried and tested and approved! Thanks again for sharing it and...

    Serving Temperature...

Shouldn't be a problem but if you're trying to keep the temps consistent for any reason, be aware that the thermostats in most fridges like that are miserable and inaccurate. If you ever want to use it for a specific temp, it would probably be best to buy an external temp controller for it.

Primary from cooler to room temp?

FWIW I brewed a LHBS Newcastle clone about a month ago when it was in the mid 80s outside, and to keep the power bill down, we kept the room at 77. I kept the beer fermenting at around 77 degrees. I used dry yeast (forgot which strain), but no off flavors or bananabombs... I'm sure keeping it at...

CO2 Tank inside or outside kegerator?

You would get the same problem with having the CO2 tank on the outside as well. It's the nature of CO2 tanks, since they don't rely on pressure for the first 90% of it's capacity. They're originally filled with liquid CO2 which evaporates as you use it, hence you won't see a pressure change...

What's the most vigorous/potentially dangerous fermentation you've had?

My roomate brewed a stout in a 6.5 with just the standard bubbler airlock on it with a bung. It was his first beer ever. There are stains all over the wall in the hallway closet from it still. He flooded the carpet with crap, and soiled some of my other roomate's clothes that were hanging up in...

    CO2 Bottle Filling In Memphis?

Check for fire extinguisher places. That's where I got my 20lb filled. Cost me $38 on a Monday, and +$4 for any other time during the week. Good luck!

Best place to find LARGE boil pot ??

I've looked at the bayou classic tamale pot on amazon (free shipping with prime, and it's only in the $40 range). Definitely a good sized pot and decent price. Sure, it'll be flimsy

    Broken hydrometer..

Hydrometers from a pet store will be identical, but be sure to check the calibrated temperatures. For salt water, they're usually calibrated for the 70s, dunno if beer ones are the same or lower. Otherwise they're the same, and will give you your sG readings no problem.

Specific Gravity - Who Checks it?

Very interesting thread. I've made about 7 or so batches now (all extract with steeping grains except the first 2, which were Mr. Beer) and never taken hydrometer readings. That being said, I bought a thief yesterday so on my future batches I'll be able to use a hydrometer. I have two...

    Beer and Health

I'm mostly just a lurker and "absorber" around here, but fantastic information. Thank you all for sharing and (hopefully) doing your research :)
