    over hopped my stout

yeah, i was just trying to use up my hops that were leftover from other batches. Not 100% sure on the amount of each type of hop because my scale wasn't level on the counter.

    over hopped my stout

For sure, 1 oz of golding at 4.9, probably .6 oz of fuggles at 4.2, and about .5 oz of saaz at 8.9. Recipe called for 1.8 oz of golding at 5%. I was trying to use up some left over hops. The recipe is Jamils mcquaker oatmeal stout.

    over hopped my stout

So, I was brewing an oatmeal stout last night and discovered my scale was not sitting flat on my counter. The result is that I think I put in about two times as much hops as called for. Any ideas on what this will do to my beer and how to salvage it?

    Beer labels

I print out all my labels on regular white paper and adhere them to my bottles with milk...it works great and they come off real easy with water. hard to beat it.

spread brew day over two days?

Hey all, I'm planning on brewing a partial mash-oatmeal stout. Is there any downside to breaking the brew process down over two days? I was thinking about steeping the specialty grains and doing the mini-mash tonight, refrigerate overnight and doing the boil, adding the hops/malt extract and...

boil over - cleaning outdoor burner

Well, I just had picked up a new banjo outdoor burner to boil my batches. I started making the NB Biere de garde in my 20 qt pot and when I went to add the last 4 lbs of DME, it boiled over like crazy. It probably doubled in volume, all over my deck and all over my brand spankin' new burner...

Broken wyeast packet - is it salvageable?

Well, I also e-mailed AHS and they responded that they'll send me a replacement pack and apologized for the inconvenience. Pretty awesome, only bad thing is I'll probably have to wait to brew until next week when the good pack arrives.:(

Broken wyeast packet - is it salvageable?

Okay, I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this one. Just got my AHB ESB kit from UPS today and the WYEAST smack pack leaked out into the second clear plastic package that they sealed the WYEAST package in. The smack pack still seemed intact. Is there anyway I can use this stuff now by...

    astringent taste from rinsing grains?

Thanks for the advice on the finings...I've actually got another batch in a secondary now I'm going to sample before I bottle to see if I've got the bitterness. I'll give the finings a try if I've got a problem with the current batch.

    astringent taste from rinsing grains?

No, I didn't squeeze...I do find it tempting to squeeze every last drop out ...but I didn't do that. :) I vaguely remember the guy at the shop where I bought all my equipment warning me not to squeeze the bag, which also made me think rinsing may also be an undesirable thing to do too...

    astringent taste from rinsing grains?

Thanks for all of the tips and advice. I'll give it another few weeks in the bottle and hope it improves. The first brew I made (Brewers Best Red Ale) didn't have that aftertaste and it had specialty grains with it too, but I didn't rinse it, which made me think rinsing in the later...

    astringent taste from rinsing grains?

One of the beers was a NB Phat Tyre Amber Ale kit, the other is a NB Nukey Brown Ale kit. Both spent 1 week in the primary, 2 weeks in a secondary, 2 weeks of bottling conditioning before I cracked them open. I've got a nice beer fridge in the garage and have both of them in it now, is it...

    astringent taste from rinsing grains?

I recently bottled a few batches of beer and both seem to have the same problem...a prolonged, not so pleasant bitter after taste. I got to thinking and I remember rinsing out the specialty grains after I let it steep for the 30-min. I had good temp control and didn't boil the grains, but I...

    trub/sediment in bottles

I had the batch in the primary 5 days and the secondary for 14 days. I keep the primary up on a table with the secondary on the floor, and I will prop up the primary up with piece of wood. Perhaps I'm getting too greedy when I move from the primary to the secondary because I try to tilt the...

    trub/sediment in bottles

I finished brewing and bottling my third batch recently. It was a NB Nukey Brown Ale. I tastes good and looks good, except every bottle has this trubby/sediment stuff in the bottom of the bottle. My first and second batch turned out fine w/o this stuff, only this batch. On this batch, I...

    Hello from downstate IL

Hey, all. I just finished my first batch of brew a few weeks ago and have been enjoying the final product. I'm definately hooked...can't beat the smell of the hops brewing in the kitchen and filling the house with that glorious smell. Can't wait to get going on the next batch!
