    New hop leaf growth yellowish?

This is my first year growing hops. I am growing them for fun, and if I end up with a few for beer, great! My main question is that my new growth leads seem to start yellowish and then green up. Is this normal, or do I need more/ less water? Perhaps some food for the plants.hops 2 by Drewed...

    When to sour?

As I wander down the path of sours, I find that there seems to be three distinct paths to take. There is the “Sour In The Kettle” path where a sour mash is made before the boil and hop additions. There is the “Pitch It All At Once” where the lacto is pitched at the same time as the yeast. Sub...

    BeerSmith, Brewers Friend, or????

I’m loooking at buying brewing software. What is everybody using, and what er the good/ bad points. I mainly want to use it track and store my brewing journal. I also need it to scale up or done in volume as I usually make 1 -3 gallon batches. If it would be able to handle mead and cider...

    Dark beer

Why are all my beers coming out to dark? I just made a German Blonde kit that looks more like a nut brown. It was a 45 min boil with 1lb Pilsner DME(Northern Brewer kit.). I didn’t even add all the DME up front in case it was somehow “toasting” during the boil. Am I boiling too hard? Is DME...

    Yeast Propagation question

I'm trying to build up a stock of yeast by making a starter to increase the volume of yeast, then pitching only half of it and keeping the rest in the fridge for later use in little soda bottle pre-forms. This has worked well, but I let my stock get too low and now I am trying to make a large...

    O.G. Calculator needed

Is there a on-line calculator for estimating O.G.? I started a Cyser last night, and I thing I screwed up the Orignal Gravity reading. It was showing me a reading of 1.060. This morning I see that I have a large amount of honey that has settled to the bottom of the carboy. I'm starting to...

    Locations for cider in Wisconsin

So after pretty much hi-jacking another thread I thought it would be helpful to have this information on its own. Please list where you buy you cider from, prices if you can remember, and if they discount for bring your own carboys. The only one I know of off the top of my head...

Help! Orange Spice Mead looks a little "funny"

I have a variation of JAOM going that is from Denard Brewing. I think he calles it the Achient Orange BOMM. I think something has happened to it as it suddenly looks "funny" to me. I tried to capture it in a picture. Lol. I love watching the raisins float up and down. It...

Dansk Mjod Vikingernes Mead recipe wanted.

Does anybody have a clone recipe for Dansk Mjod Vikingernes Mead? I've seen a few for the Viking Blod, but none on the vikingernes. About all I can tell you is what it says on the bottle: "The oldest known recipe for mead to be written down in the Nordic countries was in 1520 by the Archbishop...

    Saving yeast

I have a batch of cider that is just about ready to rack into the secondary fermenter. It has a lovely couple of inches of yeast and apple droppings at the bottom. Could I scoop this up in a mason jar and store in the fridge until fall and the next batch of fresh cider?

Making a starter with liquid yeast

According to the the White labs web site, I should be making a starter with my Scottish cider yeast. I do not have any DME, could I use GoFerm? And if so, how much to how how much water? I really want to give this cider the best chance and being something special.

Need a recipe for use with WLP773 Scottish Cider

I just found out that my order of WLP773 Scottish Cider yeast has shipped. I'm going to dive right in and make a 5+ gallon batch. I have a source of good cider - a local orchard freezes a bunch and it is still decent when thawed. OG is ~1.040. Should I add some corn sugar, brown sugar...

    TOSNA (TiOSNA) for cider

All the rage in the mazer camps now seems to be using Stagered Nutrients Addiations to improve the life of the yeast. Also included in the happiness of yeast drive is hydration, de-gassing / oxygenation. By not stressing the yeast the amount of "rocket fuel" can be limited, resulting in a mead...
