For Sale Bulk sale of my homebrewing gear (Fairfield Cty, CT)

Hi all - I am getting out of homebrewing and selling my gear which was used for 5 gallon batch BIAB going into bottles. All equipment is less than 5 years old. I would love to get rid of it all at once, looking to get $150/BO for everything. Details: - 4 fermenters: 7 gal Fermonster...

    Fixing bottle bombs

I realize this is a pretty old thread, but for the first time ever I had a couple of bottles explode out of my 5 gallon batch. I definitely bottled too early, I thought FG was stable after 3 weeks but it wasn't. Live and learn! I just popped and re-capped 30 or so bottles, this thread definitely...

    Brew day is exhausting!

I'm brewing outside for the same reason, except it was the smell of the boil that got her... being in New England I'm wondering how my Feb brew days will go.

Individual Bottle Priming Instructions with Cane Sugar

I used to only do batch priming (boiled sugar mixed in the bottling bucket), but I had huge variations in and between batches, with under-carbonation on a regular basis, even weighing all things carefully. A few years ago I switched to the significantly more expensive Cooper drops for bottle...

What came in the mail for you today?

By sheer chance my newest Wilser bag arrived in the mail today too! When I moved up from 2.5 to 5 gallon batches I made the mistake of buying a BIAB on Amazon, it was total crap so it ended up in the trash after a single use. That's what happens when you try to save a few bucks, I am now a...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

Hi all - just wanted to go on record that the advice in this long-running thread gave me the strength to resist re-pitching after thinking my first time using liquid yeast was a dud. With dry yeast I’m usually bubbling in 12 hours, this one took about 48 hours (no starter). So right now I’m...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

Count me in - gently placed it into the empty plastic test tube thingy and apparently that was too much of an impact... thinking about just saying "F it" and instead of testing just assuming that (based on prior experience) my beer has the standard alcohol content for the style. I'll just drink...

    2017 Hop Harvest Totals

Just harvested all the hops from my Fuggle (first full season): got about 1 oz last week and another 5 or so this week (dry), I look forward to even more next year! Here's the 2nd batch drying, banana for scale

    Sanitizing

Yes - when I started a few years back I was fine for about 6 batches then had a few "off" batches... I think this is exactly the reason! Glad to hear someone else confirm (or at least re-state) my theory. Since then I go over the top with cleaning and sanitizing and every batch since has been...

Primary fermentation activity for extract vs all grain

Hey all - I've been doing all grain brewing for about 2 years. I recently accidentally ordered the extract version of a DIPA kit instead of the all grain version, and instead of returning it figured I'd give it a try. Always up for learning something new. All went smoothly on brew day...

    Wilserbrewerbags vs The Brew Bag

My Wilserbags (including the free hop bag - thanks!) have been my go-to for the past 6 brew days and so far zero complaints and lots of positives. Perfect fit, easy to use, good beer at the end - that's what it's all about. I have no experience with the Brew Bag, maybe it's as good, but I can...

Do you carbonate per style guidelines?

I haven't so far but for the stout I'm about to bottle I'm going to reduce the sugar to reduce carbonation and (hopefully!) improve mouth-feel... the last batch using a default amount was a little over-carbonated for a stout.

What came in the mail for you today?

All-grain Dunkel Weiss kit... as soon as my fermenter is empty of oatmeal stout this is next!

    Beer has a 'mediciny' taste

Hi - Yes, right before bottling I use a one step no-rinse cleaner on all the bottles then sanitize each one with Star San. I'm posting a pic of what I use, it seems to be working well. Not sure exactly why it made such a difference, but I'm guessing that rinsing after drinking then weeks (or...

    First timer

Welcome to the hobby. As noted by many it is a great one - very satisfying and not too challenging. This forum is an excellent resource, it is key to my on-going growth as a brewer. One of the things I love about homebrewing is that you can keep it simple or get completely nuts. I personally...

    Beer has a 'mediciny' taste

I also rinse immediately after pouring, then rack to dry, but now on bottling day I actually use a one-step cleaner on all my bottles prior to sanitizing with Star San. This did the trick for me, so if you're not executing that extra step you might give it a try in addition to anything else...

    Beer has a 'mediciny' taste

Hi - welcome to the hobby. I started brewing last year and had exactly the same issue - after several good batches I suddenly had a few batches that tasted medicinal. I was re-using my bottles of course, and realized that although I was rinsing bottles then sanitizing before re-use, I wasn't...

Anybody remember Colt 45 Malt Liquor?

Scuba tank! Back in college my drummer and I (bass) would each get one of those 40 oz beauties to liven up rehearsal... by the end the rhythm section was loose but happy!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just brewed up a single-hop Columbus IPA this morning, into the fermenter an hour ago. This has been my go-to IPA for a while, made a few changes today to see what kind of difference it makes (different crystal malt, different hop schedule). Cheers!
