Best white wine type for Elderflower infusion.

I would love your recipe for when I'm a little more confident doing things from scratch, that sounds delicious! I would also like a recommendation for a type of white I can buy in a kit to add Elderflower to just for now. Only done four kits so far and still getting the hang of things so don't...

Best white wine type for Elderflower infusion.

I'm in the UK so I can't find that here. I was thinking more like what type of wine, i.e a shiraz or pinot grigio or blanc. I know nothing about wine or the different types except that dry white is great for risotto!

Best white wine type for Elderflower infusion.

Hi there. I just made my first 6 bottle Elderflower Wine kit. It's nice, not phenomenal, could have a stronger Elderflower flavour and it's pretty pricey per bottle. I'd like to make a larger kit and just add my own dried Elderflowers. I'm still only working from kits as I've only done a few...

Cider Kit taking too long, someone with some know how please have a look.

Yeah I have tested it and it's only 1.001 off. I phoned the manufacturers of the kit yesterday and they told me to bottle with one of each brew in a plastic bottle so I took the plunge. They have no idea what went wrong other than maybe the temp. I have one more of their kits so if that one...

Cider Kit taking too long, someone with some know how please have a look.

Other than SG is there anyway I can see if the yeast is still alive? If I were to bottle one flip top how long would it take to carbonate (I could see if it works after priming maybe?) I also have some coopers 500ml pet bottles that I could use. I will leave it another week. Have I got the...

If I leave it even longer am I risking the yeast dying and ruining my chances of carbonation?

Cider Kit taking too long, someone with some know how please have a look.

It's in the top range of its temp for the yeast so I can't really up it anymore. It's started to clear now it's been that long and it's looking lovely. Almost crystal clear. SG is consistent and has been for a week or two. Although the kit doesn't recommend bottling at that SG, from what I...

Funny smell to cider on day 8.

Smell seems to have died down a lot now after leaving the lid slightly ajar yesterday. Panic over!

Okay, so it's now been 28 days and the SG reads a consistent 1.012. I'm guessing that fermentation has now stopped. The kit says to only bottle at 1.006 or lower. What should I do? Thanks, Sarah.

Funny smell to cider on day 8.

Not floating no but there is a scum build up around the sides of the container. My bad - it's actually strawberry and Lime (Young's again with around the same abv). Ingredients state there is strawberry juice concentrate in it. It's very red so I'm guessing there's a fair bit of it in there...

Funny smell to cider on day 8.

The peach and passionfruit is a add back flavoring if that's the right term. At the moment it's just apple juice. It's a very repulsive smell and none of my other ciders or wines have had that smell!

Funny smell to cider on day 8.

It may be co2, I'm not really sure. I've read a lot about the sulfer 'bad eggs' smell, I remember sulfer very well from school and I don't think it's that. It was a concentrate apple juice kit with yeast sweetener and nutrients. It's called Young's peach and passionfruit cider. It's pretty...

Funny smell to cider on day 8.

Hi again. So this is my second kit batch now and I have the temperature stabilised and it's going well. The SG is sitting at about 1.006-1.008. When I had a smell of the fermenter it had a really strong smell of what I can only describe as alcohol as it made my nose and throat sting a tiny...

    Hydrometer vs Refractometer

So how simple is it to calculate the correct SG with a Refractometer and the calculator? Do I need to know the final outcome of abv? Sorry if that's a silly question.

SG taste difference at 1.000 as opposed to 1.060

Thank you, definitely a typo on my part lol. That's ideal then because I want to carbonate. Thanks!

SG taste difference at 1.000 as opposed to 1.060

The instructions for my cider kit say to bottle at 1.060. I have read several posts that say to wait until it's 1.000 or lower. What effect on the taste of the cider, and alcohol content will there be if I do it at 1.000 as opposed to 1.060? Sarah.

    Hydrometer vs Refractometer

Hi everyone. I'm very new to brewing. I find a Hydrometer a hassle. Lots of sterilising, turkey basting the cider out, getting the liquid at the right temp for the Hydrometer and insuring it doesn't touch the sides of the test tube. Plus every time I check the SG I'm using a fair bit of liquid...

Cider Kit taking too long, someone with some know how please have a look.

Do you mean fully open, with just a towel or no lid at all like mentioned earlier in the thread? That terrifies me if I'm honest. I have read so much about keeping it clean, sterile and free of contaminants that even when I open the cap I'm super cautious. What are gamma lids? Apologies for...
