    2nd brew concerns

Sampled a bottle today and it was great! Not much head tho. Leaving it for another week to carbon could help? Its now 3 weeks since bottling. It was really clear but the colour was brown instead of light pale ale. I used 90% Pale Ale Malt and 10% Crystal 150ebc (60L). Too much crystal for...

    2nd brew concerns

I've had it at 61F for 6 days, very low airlock action during that time and foamy krausen that is not falling. I was planning to move it into room temp closet (68 - 70f) tomorrow. It's ok to let the temp rise even if the krausen aint falling? And thanks! This batch feels like it's going...

What I did for beer today

Got my wife mad by drilling a spigot hole on my new bottling bucket and cleaning my brewing gear instead of cooking. Emptied a room temp closet for my fermenter, just gotta figure where to shove all the crap I pulled out from there. Beer oughta help with that! :mug:

    2nd brew concerns

Will do, thanks! Was planning on dry hopping after 2 weeks as I figured it should have fermented by then. So possibly start rising the temp around 10th day and let it rise, dryhopping on 14th? And just to clarify, to free rise you mean take it out from bath and let it be or should I rise the...

    2nd brew concerns

I had bucket of star san on my feet but mug / pan on the table is great idea. Why I didn't think of that misefl! Thanks! All I can do now is RDWHAHB (Or in this case some craft). Read some stories on the forum and seems that the yeasts can handle alot of mess ups for us. I put the carboy...

    2nd brew concerns

Brewing day done! I had to dilute the wort post boil for about 1L to get my og to 1.050 but all went ok. Boiloff was about 15% and my preboil gravity was tad higher than assumed. I accidentaly stirred my rehydrating yeast without dipping the spoon into starsan first. I did sanitize it...

    2nd brew concerns

Alrighto, brewday is getting closer and was going through my equipment. Broke my hydrometer last time. Now I got couple old ones from my dad and Instructions are long gone. Having hard time reading the scale tho. It has g/l scale and the one in picture. I figured it's read something...

    2nd brew concerns

Since I have to order my supplies online, Ill save some cash and order for next batch on same order. Was planning to brew some red ale for xmas! I will use the same yeast (us05) and as I brew only 2,5 gallons, one pack feels a bit overkill? Probably would be brewing on same day I bottle the...

    2nd brew concerns

True! I used the solution last time and it feels much easier and sugar gets sanitized too. Ill just take the tap from my old one and get some cheap bucket to attach it on. Thanks!

    2nd brew concerns

Ok, will drop the recipe efficiency down to 70. And if I happen to go really high, I can add some water pre-boil to even it a bit? I was under the impression that I could add the priming solution straight to fermenter? I will have tap in my fermenter so figured I could bottle straight from it...

    2nd brew concerns

Thanks brewpool! That should do the trick. Hoping I wont get unlucky with temps and off tastes this time. Mainstreaming my process and removing the scratched parts should help tho. I guess ill skip the wine thief and just drink the samples. Trying to minimize the amount of samples tho, so...

    2nd brew concerns

Hey. Time for my second brew! Last time around things didn't go too smooth but I did learn alot about brewing and my setup. Got few questions before diving back in, and I realize most of these are probably answered million times over so sorry about that. Last brew had really metallic after...

First brew - og off the charts

I tasted one bottle week ago and it sure was beer. Nice hoppy aroma and good bitter taste, but it had a bit of "alcohol" side taste to it. From what I've read its probably due temperature changes during fermentation? It didnt feel "watery" either so I think the added water didn't do too much harm.

First brew - og off the charts

I am planning to bottle it at 3rd of January so total time in primary would be 17 days. I could push the bottling back to 10th but not sure if it would help that much? I was also wondering if I should use my left over hops (about 2 grams each) to dry hop as my batch size got larger than expected?

First brew - og off the charts

Happy holidays! Beer has been fermenting for almost a week and got myself some trouble. Was away for few days and weather changed from -8c to +10 outside and my room temp jumped up to 24-25c where the beer is fermenting. I got it down to 20c pretty fast when I got home but it probably gets...

First brew - og off the charts

I have to adjust my efficiency up and increase the boil off rate bit for the next batch in BrewMate. Now I just need to start drinking more beer to get more bottles for my increased batch size, what a shame! Thanks for all the help, will keep you posted.

First brew - og off the charts

I used the strike and sparge water volumes from brewmate and had about 18.5L pre-boil, but ended up with only 10L post-boil. I had to use 3 kettles to boil it so that probably explains the huge boil-off rate. (I apparently managed to loose a 12L pot somewhere). I havent measured my gravity today...

First brew - og off the charts

I didn't use extract but mashed in my DIY cooler mash tun and sparged with continuous sparging. I did check my OG meter (floating) and I did read the measures wrong yesterday, but the start was somewhere between 1.1 and 1.2 and after topping up with water it was around 1.055. I checked in a...

First brew - og off the charts

Hey all! So, i finished my first brew today and it was not without few hickups as expected. I was aiming for 16L batch with og of 1.055. I forgot to adjust my hops accordingly in brewmate and threw in hops for 19L batch, but didnt realize that until I was done. After mashing was done I...
