will killer yeast kill brett, lacto, etc?

Killer yeast is any yeast that is harboring a 'killer virus' and produces a 'killer protein' that is toxic to non-killers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_yeast Any yeast not carrying the killer virus is NOT immune, and will experience cell death with any interactions with the killer...

    12-12-12 Wee Heavy Recipe Formulation

Just transfered the Wee heavy to a secondary. The gravity went from 1.100 (Jan 16th) to 1.023 (Feb 12th)= 10.3% abv- according to beersmith, in just under a month! I'm excited to see if it drops any more points. If not- I think I'll be happy because the hydrometer sample tasted great. I'm...

    12-12-12 Wee Heavy Recipe Formulation

I'm going to check on mine by the end of the week, and possibly put it in the secondary with a spiral of oak. I also just realized that 12-12-12 is the last non-decreasing "arithmetic sequence" date for almost a thousand years. In other words, arithmetic sequence dates after that will need...

Tasting notes of a 137 year old beer

That's amazing, thanks for sharing with pictures as well! Was there any yeast at the bottom? Could you/Did you culture the yeast?

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Mugwort Anti-Imperial Stout

I just made this and have an extra keg around. If I'm going to keg this beer, would you recommend doing the same (albeit less molasses?) and carbonate naturally in the keg? If force carbonating, which I'm thinking I will do, what about making up a quart of molasses/sarsaparilla tea for a...

    nut brown help

I make my Pecan Nut Brown with "Carastan Malt", and have never regretted it- it gets a toffee/caramel flavor that really sets it apart. If you have access to it, I highly recommend smelling it and tasting a bit of the grain. It's around 30L, if I remember correctly. In a 5gallon recipe, I use...

    Wedding Recipe Help

If your fiancée likes champagne and you want to use hops, try a carbonated graff. A graff is just a hopped cider, and I find that carbonated cider (if fermented dry) will give very champagne-y elements.

    Wish list.

Haha, every now and then when I get bored at work, I browse this website and try to formulate a plan for brewing for the next few months. It's fortuitous that I would browse to this thread. At the moment here is what I'm planning: For October/November: 1- IIPA (Brewed) 2- Pecan Nut Brown...

    Pairing Beer with Cigars...

You may be right, but I'm not so sure. I still 'feel' an effect of a cigar, and I personally feel that I run slower the day after- maybe it's psychological.

    Pairing Beer with Cigars...

I also don't smoke much, being a long distance runner, but I manage to sneak one in every so often (about 3-4 times a year). Mostly during celebration weeks, such as New years, St. Pats Day, and hopefully my upcoming graduation next May.

    Pairing Beer with Cigars...

That sounds awesome. I've had both, but not together. I love me some Bourbon County Stout. Now for the waiting part.

    Pairing Beer with Cigars...

I'm curious if anyone else does this. I'm not super well versed in the area of cigars, but I definitely enjoy a nice beer/homebrew with a proper cigar. I refuse to smoke more than about 4-5 times a year, since I also do lots of long distance running, but when I do I like to have a nice beer...

Outdoor Kegerator Labels for Wedding Shower

I really like the idea of a shiny trashcan, I might steal that idea. Did the labels end up falling off? That looks like a lot of condensation forming around them. How did you get them to stick on?

    Volunteering at beer festivals

I have volunteered at 2 brewfests in my town. The first was great, everything was awesome, I got to meet managers and brewers in the business and get free swag from them. (And coupons to their breweries). The second was poorly planned. There were too many people and too little beer. I...
