How many gallons of EdWort's Haus Pale Ale have been made?

    First brew since September 2008. All Grain 3360 + 5 ----- 3365

    Improved burner performance.

I don't see why it wouldn't. The notion of forcing the hot gases to flow better around the side of the pot seems like a no-brainier. But how much this sort of design would make a material difference to time to boil is unclear to me. We need a mechanical engineer to jump in here and give us a...

    Cheap Fermenting vessels?

I for one am not 100 percent convinced this is such a bad idea. The conventional wisdom is that #2 - #7's are bad, but this may be a mostly untested hypothesis. (Note, I'm setting aside the BPA issue for this discussion). Take a look at this thread. I think the theories about plastic bottles...

Better Bottle 6 US Gallon Better Bottle

Light weight and safe. One time it was a little hard to get completely clean, but in general much, much better than glass. Highly recommended Price Payed: $30.00 Recommended? Yes

    Brewing through Hurricane Ike

"... but girl, don't they warn ya? [in Houston] it pours, man, it pours."

Inline Coolant Chiller - No pond pump required.

It would be simpler; but slower, subject to greater contamination because of the open kettle and it is more work stirring for half an hour. Cooling the wort is really the only semi-frustrating thing left for me in brewing. It is the step I'd most like to improve. John

    Brewing through Hurricane Ike

Sure and as I pointed out in another thread I use the same cooler as a mash tun, pre-chiller for my double coil immersion chiller and fermentation cooler. It works as long as you don't brew too frequently. As it is, I generally skip using a secondary and brew roughly about every other week...

Inline Coolant Chiller - No pond pump required.

The idea I had, but haven't yet tried, is to just drop a small, sanitized, submersible pump into the middle of my immersion chiller with the outflow pointed through the coils at the side of the kettle. The goal would be to simulate the whirlpool effect of Jamil's chiller without mucking about...

    Brewing through Hurricane Ike

Yep, power came on Monday night at about 8pm. It's funny because just before it came on I said I wouldn't mind being without power for another 24 hours. As it is the weather is, for Houston, gorgeous. There's a very nice breeze, 77f and low humidity.

    Brewing through Hurricane Ike

For us it really wasn't bad, because we didn't have to worry about storm surge. In our neighborhood the wind was very loud, but was never terrifying. It never felt like the house was going to come apart. My biggest concern was the possibility of a tornado. That's what kept me awake most of...

    Brewing through Hurricane Ike

... well not exactly, but close. I live in Pearland, just south of Houston. Being wise, on Thursday I stayed home to prepare for the storm. Being very wise, I decided I'd also do an AG version of Jamil's dark mild at the same time. Everything went great and I got the beer put to bed in my...

    Which cooler to get...

I have the 60 qt and my last batch sparge efficiency was 82%. I like it because I use a single cooler for three or four things: 1. Mashing 2. Container for ice/water to use with my double coil immersion chiller 3. And finally as my Fermentation Cooler. and 4. To hold freezer items...

How many gallons of EdWort's Haus Pale Ale have been made?

I'm pretty sure it does. So adding your partial mash and my all grain: 746 gallons + 5 + 5 = 756 gallons John

    Austin Homebrew crushed grains

Interesting. When I read the instructions I did not think they were actively choosing fly sparging over batch sparging for higher gravity beers. I assumed that they had done so for the sake of simpler, unambiguous directions and that this was boilerplate for all their all grain recipes. If...

    Austin Homebrew crushed grains

You are absolutely correct. I just went back and looked at their instructions and they call for a fly sparge at 12 min per gallon. I'm sure that would have made a significant difference. Do you know if all their All Grain recipes call for fly sparging or just higher gravity beers? John

    Austin Homebrew crushed grains

I did a Dead Guy Ale Clone from Austin Homebrew a month ago and ended up with an efficiency in the low 60's. I had to add a couple of pounds of DME to hit my target O.G. Part of that low efficiency was the fact that it was my first All Grain in 8 years and my technique was rusty, but I was...

    Austin Homebrew crushed grains

Do you have the non-adjustable Maltmill? If so, I think the rollers are set to .045", which is a wider gap than many prefer, e.g. my LHBS claims to crush at .040". If you do have the non-adjustable mill, have you tried crushing your grain twice? John --- Primary - EdWort's Haus Pale Ale...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Brewed my first batch of this recipe yesterday. Very straightforward. Everything went perfectly. Thanks Ed. My only derivation was that my LHBS had neither Nottingham nor US-05 and I wasn't about to make a starter and pitch liquid as that seemed counter to the spirit of the endeavor. So I...

    My first stuck fermentation

I will report back with gravity on Thursday or Friday. Thanks everyone for talking me off the cliff.
