    Does this look like contam?

    Longest apfelwein ferment time?

I have 5 gallons going at 58F for experimental purposes. It's still bubbling away after 2 months, and I just took a hydro reading: 1.030 :D

For those with fancy pants wort chillers

I seem some crazy double coil chillers going around the gallery pics. Noticeable improvement with one one of those?

How do you measure a gallon?

Sounds corny, but I'm trying to find the reason I am frequently off (short) 0.5 gallon on my ag brews final wort volume. Measured out 4 quarts in a large pyrex (1 gallon) and it doesn't come close to the top of a 1 gallon cider jug. So, something is off.

    This hobby, and weed

Just curious how many (admitting that is) find interesting patterns and parallels between this hobby and pot. Only one thing smells as amazing as fresh hops, and that's fresh HERB . :ban: I don't smoke or grow anymore, but the smell of buds, and hops, are the greatest. I grew in high...

    Aged double bastard?

I'm thinking of buying a case of this stuff and sitting on it for a few years. Anyone tried aged DB and what are your experiences?

    Calculating sparge water

Strike is easy, xyz lbs. x 1.33, but what's the general number for finding sparge volume?

    Aeration pre boil?

I will be heating my strike and sparge water inside, as well as my mash in a cooler. The boil will take place outside on a burner. Do most people just drain into a bucket/pot, and pour straight into the brew kettle? Or is avoiding aeration so important pre-boil that I should find a way to...

So If I'm sparging in two batches..

Say the calculator calls for a 5 gallon sparge, and since I'm doing this on a stovetop it will be two, 2.5 gallons sparges. Am I better off boiling the first batch, and run the 2nd one to 180? Or boil them both? Thanks

Ever -totally- missed your OG with ok results?

I bought the winter warmer PM kit from Austin Homebrew Supply (great kit/ingredients btw). Was really psyched about this one but something went horribly wrong OG suggested 1.072. Mine? 1.054. Fantastic.:( I followed the directions to the T -except- I decided to do late extract addition...

    Batch sparge question

So say my mash calculator calls for 5 gallons sparge water. I see some people pour the entire thing in after 1st runnings, wait 10 mins, and proceed to vorlauf and they are done. Other people break it up into two, 2.5 gallon sparges. Is there a difference? Also, isn't lifting 5 gallons of...

Mash tun: water or grain 1st?

For the mash: do you add your grain or strike water first, and for what reason(s)?

    Disturbing the grain bed

I see all this mention of "disturbing the grain bed", then when reading about methods like batch sparging, you just pour the water right in there and obviously the grains get all mixed up. Can someone explain this part to me?

Why does my tripel get cloudy?

Belgian tripel, extract w/ grain steeping. 1 month in the bottle. When refrigerated it gets very cloudy. not sure what it is or if it affects flavor, just curious. (and no, its not yeast being stirred up)

    Few questions about PM

About to start my first few PM's going mostly by Deathbrewer's write-up (thanks for that!) but was curious... 1) All the methods of PM'ing mention late, or close to end of boil extract addition. I plan to do this exclusively, any reason I can't do this every time? 2) Forgive my noobness...

All my extract beers taste the same

Extract kits w/ grain steeping from a reputable company, I have made a wheat and tripel in the last two months. Neither one has much more than a month in the bottle. They are both very good, but have this identical, annoying taste to them I cant figure out. Sometimes, I can't tell which one...

    Protein and hops residue

Currently on my 2nd brew, both extracts w/ grain steeping. On my first brew, the protein settled to the bottom and I took the time to siphon the wort into my brew bucket. Left about an inch of muck on the bottom. This time I got a little lazy and poured everything in. How is this going to...

    Extract brewing is excellent

Been doing the kits from my local guy, w/ grain steeping. I have no desire to step up my level of brewing for now, these are turning out superb. :mug:

    Belgian Tripfel--help me pick a yeast~

Great extract kits from my local supplier, this one comes with 11 lbs. of fermentables. He gives 4 options for yeast, and I have no clue what to do with. Liquid/dry does not matter, but I always like dry for the savings. Wyeast 3787 or 1214, White labs wlp530 or safbrew t-58.

    Dry hopping question

Yeah so I just dry-hopped 5 gallons of apfelwein to an ounce of Spalt hops. There is 1/2" of forestry floating on the top. Will this eventually drop out?
