    carbonation trouble

I just had a couple of brews from a batch i made a month ago. The carbonation is really weak, almost non existant. I made a light Ale with 4 lbs of light extract and a pound of honey. It fermented in the primary for seven days(fermented well), and then onto the secondary for 10 days. I added...

    Dextrose measurment question...

How many cups of dextrose = 1 pound??? Most recipes call for corn sugar in weight, I am just wondering what the conversion is to volume/cups, because I do not own a scale.

    stirring mead?

I just finished up making three one-gallon batches of mead, all different recipes. Right now they are in air-locked plastic primaries. Im just wondering if the mead will need to be stirred? Ive read posts that say people stir their mead daily, especially if its an open fermentation. But if...

Simple mead recipes for a first-timer.

I want to make it sweet so im planning on making it with 3lbs. per gallons. However, I only have lavlin EC1118 on hand. Does mead stop being sweet and begin to be dry at a certain ABV, or can you have a relatively sweet mead at 15-18%???????

Simple mead recipes for a first-timer.

I've been home brewing for awhile now, and finally decided to take the plunge into mead making. Im just about done with Schrams Complete meadmaker, and cant wait to whip up my first batch. Im planning on making two batches, one Ive already determined will be malkores not so ancient mead. It...

My first batch is giving me trouble, please help if you can

"Because liquids are less dense at higher temperatures, it is important to take the initial reading at the same temperature as the final reading." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_%28beer%29 Just answered my own question with some research. The colder the liquid becomes, the more...

My first batch is giving me trouble, please help if you can

Im no physicist, and I'm probably wrong here, but if the density(specific gravity) of water at 60degrees, which is what my hydrometer is calibrated at, is 1.000 wouldnt water at a higher temp. 75 in your case be LESS dense(below 1.000), because as water furthers itself from freezing temperature...

My first batch is giving me trouble, please help if you can

I took a hydrometer reading and its at 1.000. So it went from 1.028 to 1.000 so im just going to assume that it did ferment and that its done. I drank the sample, and it didnt taste too appauling. It reminded me of bud light thats been sitting in the sun in a plastic cup for a few hours. I...

My first batch is giving me trouble, please help if you can

My first stab at brewing hasn't quite turned out as planned. I used the Coopers Pilsner extract kit. The book I was using has a "how to" told me that 3.3lbs would be fine for a "light" lager, but if you like full body and taste I should double it. Well I was too anxious to brew my first batch...

    Upping the S. gravity???? (OG)

couple more quick questions guys: If I were to use honey as another way to attain more fermentable sugar, is their a special kind of honey I should use, or will store bought honey suffice? How much should I use per the 5 gallon recipe I listed above?(Im just trying to up the OG a little for...

    Upping the S. gravity???? (OG)

thanks for all the interesting insight, I am a beginner at brewing(if you couldnt already tell). I very intruiged about using the minute rice. Must this be used only with all-grain recipes, or can I use it with an extract recipe? Im using 4lbs of JOhn Bull Light unhopped malt extract(which is...

    Upping the S. gravity???? (OG)

Im just wondering what the best and most economical way to boost the S. gravity/alcohol content of an american light lager/pilsner? I know that adding corn sugar will do it, but im wondering if cane sugar would be more efficient/less costly? I dont want to risk turning my brew into a cider...
