Closed transfer from Fermonster/Big Mouth Bubblers

I got so spoiled with closed transfers to keg from the carboy/better bottle with Sterile Siphon Starter - so easy and painless. Has anyone developed a hack for using Sterile Siphon Starter for closed transfer to kegs with wider mouth fermenters - like Fermonster (particular interest since I...

    Most overrated home-brew topics?

I was wondering what topics we discuss more than necessary in home brewing. Here's my list: 1. efficiency/hitting original gravity 2. Mash pH/chasing water profiles 3. decoctions 4. hot side aeration 5. Vorlauf (6). Sanitation. Don't get me wrong, it's super important. Its just that...

Haze Mystery / East Coast IPA type haze

I brewed this or very similar IPA recipe 5 times now. Every time it came very clear, following the standard cold-crash -> gelatin -> keg (or bottle) strategy. (In fact ALL of my beers are generally very clear, with rare exception of wheat ales and of course dark beers like stouts). But the last...

    oxidation during growler fill

I was wondering how much oxidation happens during regular growler fill at breweries (or at home). Its probably similar to oxidation during filling the standard bottling procedure (without purging). Has anyone done the following experiment: 1. fill the growler (or several growlers) - using...

Confession: after cleaning up beer mess...

Confession: after cleaning up beer fermentation disaster, I have decided I will have to think twice about murdering anyone. Too much cleanup afterwards, I am not really up for that.

    Used corny keg prices

so I bought a whole bunch of 5 Gallon kegs (7) over a period of a month or two, maybe 3-5 months or so ago, and I never paid more than $35 per keg. Even with shipping it was about $40 or less. I need to expand a bit and used keg prices have gone up. I have read that there is a shortage of kegs...

    My Keggerator Build

Using GE 10.6-cu ft Chest Freezer. Fits 9 kegs comfortably (can be pushed to 10 if using narrow-profile Ball kegs). Currently has 6 taps (1 Nitro for stouts, 5 regular Perlick 630SS, with 4.5inch shanks, may need to expand in the near future).

How many HBT posts are written while drunk?

what percentage of HBT posts are written "under the influence" you think? I must admit, for me it's at least 25% or so. It's like beer googles - some posts I would never comment on, unless I have a beer or two, then all of a sudden I have an opinion and desire to express it. Of course most of it...

Kari Poikolainen's "Perfect Drinking and Its Enemies" Book: What is Moderate Drinking

I am surprised this hasn't been discussed much on HBT yet. I am reading a book by Kari Poikolainen, "Perfect Drinking and Its Enemies". Poikolainen is a Finnish medical doctor and academic who has been studying effects of alcohol on health for almost 40 years. He has been working with WHO and...

Variety and Volume of Homebrew on Tap/Bottle

Let's start a new "poll" of sorts. 1.How many different beers (brewed by you!) do you currently have? 2. What is the total (estimated) volume of your own home-brew, ready to drink, do you currently have at home (kegs, bottles, both)?

Grain vs. Extract cost at your LHBS

this probably has been addressed at lengths in one of the Grain vs. Extract flamewars, and I am not trying to start a new. But I was going through my old extract recipes and costs, and once you strip the cost of yeast, hops and specialty grains, it is remarkable to see a factor of 3-4 or so in...

    Beet Stout (by Ballast Point)?

A few months ago I tried one of the Ballast Point experimental beers, a Beet Stout. It was a very tasty and very unusual, interesting beer - darker red - beet colored, but also somewhat translucent, not like a regular stout color. Delicious. I have been searching periodically to get any info...

    Cellarable beers?

this is perhaps not related to home-brew process directly but the folks here have so much experience, I thought I wanted to run this by you guys. I have built a cellar/fermentation chamber (a freezer with temperature control) and in addition to cellaring my own home-brews - mostly...

    New Brewer from San Diego

Long-time lurker. Not much of a poster yet. Still getting more experienced. This place helps a great deal. Brewed 9 batches so far (most all-grain), started back in march'2015. So far I love it - a lot to learn, still. Relaxing and creative hobby and at the end of the process you get a beer...
