Help me go all-grain for $100

I currently do partial boil (usually partial, mash partial boil) brews in a 4 gallon pot on my glass cooktop, and I have decided that I would like to make the jump to all-grain. I have $100 cash that I got as a Christmas present to get me there. I already have a turkey fryer with aluminum...

    Feedback on Altbier recipe

SWMBO is in love with Olde Mecklenburg's Copper, so I'm looking to make a Dusseldorf Altbier. This will be a partial mash, 60 minute boil: 4lbs Munich Malt 1lb Crystal 80 Malt .25lb Melanoiden Malt 3lbs Pilsen DME 3 oz Spalt (4.5% AAU) 60 min US-05 Ferment @60°F for 7-10 days, then...

American Pale Ale Tunnel Vision APA

This beer is a modified version of one I posted when asking if it would be possible to brew an IPA in 7 days. That may be the dumbest question I've ever asked. At any rate, I made some tweaks, took my time, and made what I believe is my best beer yet. I'll explain the name after posting the...

Input needed - 7 day IPA

I've had my first-ever request to brew beer for someone else. A buddy's wife asked if I could brew something up for his birthday, which is in 2 weeks. My buddy is a huge IPA fan, but 2 weeks isn't going to be long enough for me to brew, ferment, dry hop, and bottle. With that said, here's...

    Need Help with Low IBUs

After settling into a new house, I finally had time to brew this past weekend. I opted to try my hand at an Amber Ale since SWMBO and I both enjoy the style (side note, she was hardcore BMC when we met 8 years ago...how things have changed!). Anyways, this was my recipe: Steep: 8oz...

Can you leave the burner on during BIAB mash?

I'm a fairly new brewer and have been doing extract recipes with specialty grains. When I steep grains, I leave my burner on low and am able to keep temperature in the 150-155°F range. Can I leave the burner on low to maintain temperature while doing a BIAB partial mash?

Some lessons from my second brew

Last night I brewed a Blue Moon clone that I posted in this thread. This was my second brew and first non-kit brew. I learned a lot from the experience and I'm hoping I can help out some of my fellow "green" brewers. First, some background on my set-up. I brew in my kitchen. I use a 4...

Help me choose what to brew next

After brewing my first batch of beer (an American Hefe kit), I am officially infected with the brewing bug. Now I need help deciding what to brew next! The candidates: Blue Moon Clone. SWMBO loves Blue Moon, so I'd earn major brownie points. Plus, I'd like the challenge of seeing how...

Did I steep or did I mash?

I brewed my first batch of beer (an American Hefe-Weizen kit) three weeks ago. The kit came with specialty grains, and the instructions said to steep the grains in 150-155F water for 30-45 minutes, then rinse with cold water. I brought a pot of water up to 155F, submerged the muslin bag w/...
