The gravity on bottling day was 1.011

    Exploding Bottle!

So, use new caps to re-cap then?

    Exploding Bottle!

Thank you for the responses! So if I put them all in the refrigerator in cardboard six-pack boxes, they're less likely to explode? I let that batch ferment for 3 weeks before bottling. It was a beer kit that came with 5 oz priming sugar and said to use it all. I'm sure it was too much...

    Exploding Bottle!

I stored the bottles of beer from my first batch in a closed dark cabinet above my refrigerator about 2 months ago. When I had first sampled it then, I didn't like it at all. Anyways, I had kind of forgotten about it until today when I heard a loud noise come from the kitchen. I walked in to...

    Weissbier Citra Hefeweizen

What would the recommended amount of priming sugar be for a 5 gallon batch of this? I used this calculator (http://www.tastybrew.com/calculators/priming.html) selecting bavarian weizen as the style and it recommend using a lot more priming sugar than I would expect.

    Weissbier Citra Hefeweizen

I Brewed this 3 weeks ago and I am going to bottle it in the next day or 2. Is it better not to cold crash a hef at all since you want the yeast in your bottles? When I transfer the beer from the primary to the bottling bucket, do I want to try to transfer some of the yeast to the bottling...

Looking to rebound on my 2nd AG batch

Brewed this batch today. Everything went well for the most part. Only problem is my post boil gravity was 1.045 and target was supposed to be 1.050. I mashed for 60 min just a degree or two below the target mash temp with ~4 gal water and did 2 batch sparges with 170 F water until I reached my...

    Fermenter head space question

I don't have a blowoff tube unfortunately. If i'm just using a 3 piece airlock, should I just use my 6.5 gal ale pail instead?

    Fermenter head space question

Pictured is 5 gallons of sanitizer in the glass carboy. Is there sufficient headspace there to ferment 5 gallons of wort, or would it just be safer to ferment in my 6.5 gallon plastic ale pail? Thank you!

Looking to rebound on my 2nd AG batch

So basically always sparge with 168 F water and use brew smith for volume specification?

Looking to rebound on my 2nd AG batch

About to brew my second all grain batch. This time I’m going to try a hefeweizen. The recipe is one I found here on HBT: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f70/citra-hefeweizen-473178/ I punched in some numbers on the brew365 mash and sparge water calculator. It says to use 9 total gallons of...

I'm going to brew this next week. Quick question, does the "60' " and "10' " next to the hops mean to add them at 60 minutes and 10 minutes in the boil respectively? Thank you!

    First Batch Tasting

Someone asked for a pic of the beer I poured so here it is.

    First Batch Tasting

I do recall the bottling process taking long. Is it possible that the exposure to oxygen during the bottling process could be a source of the off tastes as well? I'll definitely be looking into a swamp cooler. Fingers crossed the next 2 batches taste good. I'll let you guys know how they come out.

    First Batch Tasting

jwalk - I will post a pic next time I pour one from that batch. It probably won’t be for at least a few weeks though. I’m glad I made some beer and there were some positive qualities too it. Like I said, I told myself I wasn’t going to get upset if my first batch didn’t...

    First Batch Tasting

Thanks for the replies guys. I told myself I wasn't going to get upset if the first batch didn't come out good. I am kinda disappointed though. I definitely had fun doing it though. Since then I've done another partial extract batch and an all grain batch. I have a temperature strip on my...

    First Batch Tasting

Finally tasted my first batch of Brewer's Best IPA after 3 total weeks fermenting and 3 weeks in the bottle. I let the bottle chill for 5 days in the refrigerator. The beer had a nice head and good carbonation. It also had a nice amber color but fairly cloudy. Unfortunately it has a slight aroma...

    First AG Batch, few questions

I honestly can't recall what the temperature of the hydrometer sample was. Definitely something to pay closer attention to in the future. Thanks for pointing that out! On a side note, the fermentation is bubbling vigorously right now. A little too vigorously actually. I had to remove and clean...
