    Questioning what's happening...

I'm thinking I'll ferment my next batch in the basement which holds a temp around 58-60. If I keep it off of the floor will that work well? It's pretty cool here in Michigan right now so I would bet the floor is around 50 degrees.

    Questioning what's happening...

I have a thermometer next to the fermenter and the fermenter has its own thermometer. Both read the same these first 4 days. Why would that be?

    Questioning what's happening...

Is 67 to high for my ambient temp? Unfortunately I don't know what yeast I used other than it was a dry yeast. Beer is a porter.

    Questioning what's happening...

It's the end of day 4 in the primary. Haven't seen bubbles in airlock but all the water was pushed to the exit side of it for a couple days. I figured it was just a leak in the fermenter. I pulled the lid off a few minutes ago and it doesn't look like much has happened. Ambient temp is 67 as...

    First brew day

I'm not worried about a little discoloration, but when that soot gets on it then it gets all over everything else. It cleaned up fine, just a pain. I'll get a new burner. That was actually my neighbors.

    First brew day

Has anyone else had a problem with their burner leaving soot all over the bottom of the kettle? I feel like that's a problem with the burner.

Brew day is complete. Can't wait to see that airlock start bubbling!

    First brew day

I have an extinguisher on hand and being very careful. It's 20 degrees outside here. I doubt this burner could even keep up. I have it cranked up all the way and my wort is boiling at a steady 212 degrees. But I appreciate your concern!

    First brew day

Ha funny. It was a Christmas gift. She thought it came with everything needed... She's been happy to see me spending money on everything else. And she been bringing me beers. Next time she will bring me home brews hopefully. I'm a lucky man.

    First brew day

Thank you. I've been doing quite a bit of reading and videos. My wife said she wanted me to have an at home hobby. She doesn't realize what she has done...

    First brew day

Good thing I had an extra tank of propane. Being overly prepared is paying off already.
