    Cleaning your Bag

Exactly this. As long as you rinse off in good time (I always rinse mine immediately after dumping the grains), it’ll stay pretty clean and really easy to shake out when it’s dry.

    ANYTHING by Aslin

1318 is Aslin's house yeast, which means that Mind The Hop, the Johann variants, Master of Karate, and others are brewed with it. I'm not 100% sure what their other yeasts/blends are, but 1318 is certainly a place to start if you're looking to brew something like their beers.

Leaving dark grains out of mash?

Obviously, folks can go about making beer in whatever way they choose, but I personally don't see a need to take the extra step of cold-steeping dark grains. Just throw it all in the mash and let the yeast sort it out!

Cannot overcome my Hazy IPA oxidation problem!!

Just an update now that I’ve kegged my first NE IPA. Beer was brewed on October 20 and racked to the keg on October 29. No closed transfer - keg was filled with StarSan that was pushed out with CO2 via picnic tap. Racked with auto siphon. Here’s a picture of the FG sample: And...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Interesting. I ended up with about 120 ppm Chloride and 30 ppm Sulfate for this beer. Doesn't seem like that would be a contributing factor. Perhaps the keg hop in conjunction with some other factor can be the root cause. I used 1.5 lbs of rolled oats in this beer, so I'd lean towards a...

    wilserbrewer BIAB bags

I just want to chime in here by saying that, if it weren't for BIAB (and wilser and his bags, in particular), I don't think I'd have gotten three years deep into brewing. There's no way I'd have ever continued with the hobby - or at least gone all-grain - should I have needed to go the way of a...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Re: Hop Burn... Is it possible that mineral levels would play a part? I'm no chemist, so I ask out of sheer naivete. The beer I'm having issues with had high fairly levels of chloride, so perhaps that's something to look into. Water chemistry is below: 100% RO Water Gypsum: 0.35 g/gal CaCl...

    That looks fantastic.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Interesting. I wonder what it is that causes some beers to burn like that. Looks like we need some analysis!

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Thanks for the reply! I purposely refrained from cold crashing in the fermenter because I wanted to stay away from suckback and bringing O2 into the fermenter, so I racked without crashing. I also didn't fine because I wanted the hop oils to remain in suspension as long as possible. Now I'm...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Gotcha. I'm OK with letting it sit for a bit, but I am pretty shocked at the bite/burn I'm getting at this point. I'm just really surprised to read about this "hop burn" now after all the research I've done on keg hopping. As for 1318, I'm an Aslin junkie; their house strain is 1318/a...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Interesting discussion in here about hop burn. I'll be honest...I thought that what I've gotten in one or two commercial NE IPAs - and now my first shot at a kegged NE IPA - was yeast bite. I kegged this NE IPA about 10 days ago: Grain Bill 9.5 lb Briess 2-row 1.5 lb Weyermann Wheat Malt...

    Curse You Bottling!!!

It’s really scary how similar out situations are! The big difference is that I bought all the faucets (Perlick 630SS), line, QDs, etc. first, then decided to use our old 7.1 cu ft freezer to build the keezer. It was almost two years between buying the guts of the keezer and actually building it!

    Curse You Bottling!!!

I don't particularly mind bottling, but it doesn't lend itself to the kinds of "unstable" hop-forward beers I really like to drink and am primarily planning to brew for the foreseeable future. With the keezer build recently completed, I'm off and running with brewing these beers, with the...

    Dialing In My Process

On Friday, I finally got around to brewing for the first time since March, and I have to say that it was great to get back in the saddle! This beer was a NE IPA - first time brewing one with my new keezer setup, so I'm really hopeful. Grain Bill 9.5 lb Briess 2-row 1.5 lb Weyermann Wheat Malt...

    Kegging & Misc Question

Great question, and I have to admit that I can't quite recall! I planned my keezer and bought most of the gear well over a year ago, but life got in the way so it's only recently that I've been able to get the time to complete my build. That said, I did a ton of research on the forums and I...

    Kegging & Misc Question

I finished my 3-tap keezer and tapped my first beer about a month ago, so my experience is limited only to that one beer, but... I have Accu-Flex Bev-Seal Ultra lines at 11' apiece with vertical distance from keg to tap of about 8". My keezer is 41F and the regulator is set at 12 psi - pours...
