    Your First Batch Stories

First brew was quite a while ago. 1990? It was probably some kit, I don't remember which. I do remember LME/DME and boiling it on an electric range in the small kitchen we had and adding water etc.. My wife asking why the floor and counters are so sticky like fly paper. She was less than...

    Accurate Mash Temp

Sorry for the late reply. I mash in using the strike temp. As RPh Guy said, use the calculator to determine the strike temp and follow the rest of his directions. MikeCo.. My strike temp is about 170F and after mashing in I end up at about 154F pretty consistently.. Maybe the cooler vs...

    Accurate Mash Temp

Ooops, hit the wrong key I guess. I preheat the mast tun with 2 qts water a little above the strike temp. Dump that water and mash in with the water and grain. I am usually dead on temp wise. I stir my mash every 20 min, and take temp and have noticed a 1F drop overall during the mash time...

What should harvested yeast look like?

I agree with Blazin regarding the decanting and pitching. My mason jars of yeast look to be about the same volume and I have decanted a little of the wort and pitched. Never had a problem yet.

    Question for garage/shed brewers

I brew on the back deck during the summer and in the garage during the winter. I have a 4" sediment filter and a carbon filter in line and and a UV light on the water coming in to my house. Haven't noticed any problems brewing and all the beers are very good.I just use the hose. Same water...

1 week into carbonation...is it working?

I agree. Temp plays a part in the bottle conditioning also, where are you keeping them and at what temp? Where I keep my bottles it's abt 68 F. If you move them to a place with slightly higher temps I think they will perhaps carbonate a little faster. I brewed a Blueberry Ale that took 3 weeks...

    Grain storage options?

Vittle vaults work fine for me. 1 unit holds a full sack, and relatively small footprint. 1 for GWM 2 row and the other for Crisp MO.

Who here started out all grain?

I made 2-3 extract brews in 1998 and took the plunge into all grain. At the time it seemed like extract was a pain and the kitchen and range tied up. I was very happy with the simplicity of brewing all grain on the deck or in the garage.

    First every brew day.

Had a tank go empty when brewing and grabbed the one from the BBQ. However, just about used that one up and no steak on the grill that night. No one was happy about that. Went and bought 2 more tanks the next morning.

    IPA...Sorta.

Two weeks ago, had some hops laying around and a pint of WLP001 saved from previous brew. So brewed 14# GWM Premium 2-row and had 1oz Magnum and 1oz Citra laying around. Guess it was a SMa2H brew. Bottled it today. Straw color, and very hoppy on the nose and taste. Not very good with the "hints...
