Ahoy hoy, I buy all my grain from either of our 2 "home brew stores" which are both actually beer and wine stores that side carry supplies. Since Im up in Alaska I cant afford the shipping on any grains, thus my reasoning. I pay 50 bucks for 50 lbs of Great Northern 2 row. Most specialty grains...

    Dry-hopping in Primary

Ahoy hoy, If you are cold crashing, pellets work just fine. I throw them in for dry hopping 3 days before the cold crash, which lasts 4 days. When I rack it to keg or bottle, the hops as well as everything else is a nice semi solid block on the bottom of the carboy. That solves most of it. If...

    How long to cold crash?

Ahoy hoy, When I brew anything, its in the carboy for 3 weeks. If I am dry hopping, I add it at that point, give it 3 days, then cold crash the carboy to 32-34 degrees for 4 days. At that point, its been one month, time to bottle or keg. I have had no problems with off tastes or any such thing...

Tired of high ABV? Have a Nanny State...

Ahoy hoy, Britain is a perfect example of a country spiraling down the keaster. Cheers to these folks for at least taking a stand against those nannyists....

    Hibiscus Belgian Blonde Ale

Ahoy hoy, My blonde hibiscus is blood red. I put hibiscus flowers in it, 2 oz @ 15, then 2 more dry hop. My wife thinks its the bomb. It reminds her of rosie hibiscus from canada. You can get real hibiscus from Egypt, at your local oraganic goodie store. I bought 2 pounds of it for about 30...

Got a couple of 3rd place medals in the mail today....

Ahoy hoy, The porter was a standard British to the bone porter. The other was a Belgium blond w/ hibiscus flowers added. Made it red as blood, and weird like a beer/wine. The women love it. Adios

Got a couple of 3rd place medals in the mail today....

from the ET Barnette Homebrew Competition held up here in Fairbanks. I took 3rd in the fruit beer, and 3rd in the porter. Got alot of schwagg including tshirts, mag subscriptions, glasses, coasters, hops, grains, etc. But, alas, they had run out of the medals. I plumb forgot all about it until...

    Utopias 2009

Yo... Just mix a shot of brandy with some wine, and youll be real close. I won a taste of it last year in a drawing, and I wanted to drag my tounge on the floor afterword. Im not much of a liquer person, and thats just what it reminded me of. There was nothing signature of a beer there anymore...

Took a couple of 3rd Place finishes in this years homebrew competition

Ahoy hoy, I got my schwagg from the homebrew contest this weekend. They ran out of 3rd place medals so thats on backorder. But I got a banner, a wall hung mirror, 4 XXL t shirts with beer logos on them, 2 hats, a glass in a wooden holder, a free subscription to draft magazine, a bunch of...

Took a couple of 3rd Place finishes in this years homebrew competition

Yo... They do indeed impart flavor. My wife got hooked on Rosie Hibiscus, a Canadian beer, so I worked to clone it. To me, the beer tastes like a mutation between beer and wine, and all the women that taste it love it. And the beer is blood red too. Great for those Halloween parties :D Hope...

Took a couple of 3rd Place finishes in this years homebrew competition

I dont have it here at work, but in a nutshell, its a mildy tweaked version of blonde slayer, with about a quarter pound of hibiscus flowers added, 2 oz @ 15 min, then 2 oz "dry hopping" for lack of a term for flowers :D I used dry orange skins that brewcraft sells for my orange cascade. a...

Took a couple of 3rd Place finishes in this years homebrew competition

Ahoy hoy, Well, I entered 4 beers, and the 2 that I make for others and personally do not care for came in third in ET Barnette Homebrew Competition up here in Fairbanks. I have a blonde wheat turned red with hibiscus flowers that took 3rd in the herbal beer, and my standard british porter...

    Using Artesian Well Water

Ahoy hoy, I use nothing but artesian well water in my beers. Theres a well in Fox Alaska that everyone within 40 miles that hauls water goes to get their drinking water. Silver Gultch Brewery in Fox uses nothing but Fox water, as we call it, for their beer. Its outstanding. I saw one of you...

10,000 yr old glacier ice for my water source in the next batch.....

Ahoy hoy, well all the information I have been able to find all say the same basic thing. Glacier water is purer then most any other water, but there are naturally occurring minerals and they depend on where the glacier is. I have decided not to add a thing. There will be water yeast malt and...

10,000 yr old glacier ice for my water source in the next batch.....

Ahoy hoy, Well, we are just a bit shy of 5 gallons, and theres a good third to a quarter of the ice left. Drop by drop, it slowly grows. Im guessing I might pull 6-7 gallons out of this when its done. Thats alot less then Im used to using in my 5 gallon batches of late, but ill just have to...

10,000 yr old glacier ice for my water source in the next batch.....

Im at 3.5 gallons, and still over half full cooler of ice. I might just get enough to do a full 5 gallon batch. That would rock.:ban: FYI......

10,000 yr old glacier ice for my water source in the next batch.....

Just a Note: It is legal in Alaska to harvest glacier ice. No permits needed until you get into the tons. Folks remove and consume glacier ice (mostly by melt and drink) all the time from these places. If you have never been on a glacier, then you wouldnt know how it melts. There are spots...

10,000 yr old glacier ice for my water source in the next batch.....

Holy Cripe, Ive been gone showing mom the sights since I posted, now im 5 pages behind on my own post! Ok, this glacier has receded a 1/4 mile since I last saw it(20years ago). So, the exposed ice is pretty much from the core of the glacier. If I had had a chain saw I would have gone deeper...
