    Boiling when brewing

I've seen pretty much everyone advise not to let your juice boil if you ever make cider. One reason I believe was that it will get cloudy. Is this the only reason? Will it still be fine fermentation wise? I don't care how it looks, just how it tastes.

What to do with a nasty brew

Hello fellow home brewers. I have been working on some wine for 2 months now. At the end of month 1 I tasted it and it was very weak, but not sweet at all, like most the sugar had been eaten up, but there wasn't much in there to begin with. So I racked, added a few more cups and let it sit...

    Cider not fermenting?

I've been using the same general recipe for all the ciders I've made lately, in exception to changing some measurements around such as sugar and whatnot. My last two batches have not given me any sign of activity. I was doing a cherry cider and put the usual stuff in there, and added some...

    Hydrometer/wine noob

Alright my cranberry wine I made 30 days ago has just been racked into secondary. I checked the sg and it measured out to 0.950. I just got this thing and don't know much about it, didn't even have it at the time I first made the wine so this is the first reading. Does the reading go up or...

    Wine semi-emergency

Alright I just racked some wine from primary to sec. And it doesn't taste very strong at all. The sugar has definetely been converted but i just can't taste much alcohol. I didn't put any nutrients or anything in it I just kept it very basic as this is my first batch of wine. I am currently...

    Bottle bomb prevention

So fermentation is almost done... Or at least it should be. It's been a month since I have brewed some of my first ciders and wines and I really wanna get em into some bottles. Of course I don't want any bombs so I need some help on taking precautions. I've read that if the pg reading is the...

    Aging with oak chips

Anyone tried aging with oak chips? I love the idea of it, wood always leaves an amazing taste/smell in anything it's used with, and I would like to try it with one of my ciders. I've heard of people adding it as soon as they start primary fermentation, as well as secondary. Which one is best...

Fellow cider makers, how much yeast is too much

So I went ahead and attempted my first batch of hard cider tonight, and realized I made a very stupid mistake using a tablespoon of yeast instead of a teaspoon. I only made one gallon. Not only that but when I mixed the yeast with water I think I may have heated it up too much. I didn't boil it...

    Cider noob questions

Hi there. I'm new to both home brewing and this app. Just had some questions for my first simple brew I will be starting next week. I am using the recipe from ciderup.com, it was the one YouTube video that didn't have home brew snobs commenting about how he was doing something wrong. Anyway, I...
