    Fuesel alcohol off flavours

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. That batch was definitely a drain pour. Re: the water and mash ph, I'm in Manchester uk and have brewed other beers (including some pale ales and IPA) that have come out fine without that bitter taste - so I'm thinking it can't be that. I also use a teaspoon...

    Fuesel alcohol off flavours

Hey guys, I just brewed a batch that I'm pretty sure ended up with fuesel alcohol off flavours, but I have a question about whether that can include or increase bitterness. I brewed a new recipe - NEIPA - turned out it was 10kg malt (5gal batch) instead of my usual 6kg, and I massively...

    Strong bitter aftertaste

Hey again Thanks for the words of support - I've got my ass in gear and got the recipe out for the next batch of IPA. This is a recipe for a beer I've made successfully before so I figure if I match my brewing techniques there's not reason it should turn out bad. Update - the pale ale I...

    Strong bitter aftertaste

Hey - thanks again for the reply. So I use the hop bag to save having to cold crash before bottling, but you're right I need to sanitise that bag with starsan or just throw them in there. I've had the flavour before in very early batches (pale ales) then brewed a few saisons and an ipa which...

    Strong bitter aftertaste

Hi David/josh, So before now I've just been using VWP before boil for anything that touches hot wort. Not using star San then at all (just thinking I need to build in a sanitation- no rinse- step in everything that touches cooled wort after chilling. I'll definitely be sure to leave the lid...

    Strong bitter aftertaste

Thanks for the detailed reply! I actually have been rinsing the VWP from everything I clean with it, then for bottling I use VWP, then rinse lots, then use star San and drain. So I don't think the flavour could be from the cleaners, but I guess there's a chance that because I don't sanitise brew...

    Strong bitter aftertaste

Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice in desperation to try to resolve a repeated issue I've had with my homebrew. The flavour I'm getting is massively bitter, but it has a really bad taste to it. Not like a big iipa, more like a really really green beer. The flavour overwhelms all other...

    Super Bitterness Fix?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice in desperation to try to resolve a repeated issue I've had with my homebrew. Wondered whether this thread would be a good place to post... The flavour I'm getting is massively bitter, but it has a really bad taste to it. Not like a big iipa, more like a...

    Sediment in Bottleneck

Great reply thanks for the advice - I found this thread by a search so thought I'd chance it! It was in primary (no secondary) for about 15 days, and now it's been in the bottle for a couple months it's 1.022 - dropped .02. Re-capped it and it's sitting a little more settled now, but will see...

    Under-pitched yeast/2ndary fermentation OR infection?

Thanks for the advice - will measure the gravity from the next bottle. Guessing the options are either that it hadn't finished fermenting in the first place and then just slowly carried on in the bottle, VS wild yeast fermenting the originally unfermentable sugars?

    Under-pitched yeast/2ndary fermentation OR infection?

****. The white ring is pretty faint to be honest, and in a lot of the bottles its not there, just if you move the liquid around a bit there's a trace of it.

    Under-pitched yeast/2ndary fermentation OR infection?

I've had a problem with a recent batch and just don't know what's wrong. I'd really love to hear what you guys think! I brewed a chocolate vanilla porter which has now had 2 months in bottles. Carbed to 1.7 as really careful not to overcarb. Looked at bottles today and noticed small balls of...

    Brew kettle sanitation

Thanks very much - getting on it for a deep clean before my next Brewday!

    Good beer gone bad

Sorry good question. It was an ipa, probably 4 months from bottling day. Not loads of headspace, but not full to the brim. The rest of the batch was good so I'm thinking infection in the bottle, but never sure!

    Good beer gone bad

Hi guys, Wanted to ask a question on here as I've had some really bad batches and then after a while I brewed a good batch - an ipa - a little sweet and didn't finish as strong as I expected (I think a higher mash temp would account for this) but otherwise good. I tasted it with other people...

    Brew kettle sanitation

Hey guys, Quick query about sterilising/sanitising my brew kettle. I cleaned it a week ago and left it to dry, still looks a bit moldy on the element, and the connector on the kettle wall is almost black from the times I've used it. I obviously clean it again before brewing, but should I be...
