    Trimming / Pruning

You can cut them back at a node further down the stem. The top may split which isn't good for young plants. If you cut it back you will set the plant back a week or so; however cutting will stimulate root growth. Never prune after irrigating. And keep a close eye on the plant until new growth...

    Walk-in Freezer and Pelletizing

Thanks for all the advice. I have read the best practices guide a few times now. And we keep records according to NOFA standards for all fertilizer, pesticides and processing. If my years in agriculture have taught me anything it's: keep good records and respect the DEC.

    Walk-in Freezer and Pelletizing

I am aware of the licensing. NY is very strict and very annoying.

    Walk-in Freezer and Pelletizing

I manage a small hop farm on the east end of Long Island. We are continuing to expand as the years progress, and recently we have started to acquire a new fifty acre parcel of land. The majority of breweries on Long Island heavily prefer pellets to whole leaf hops. I know that a bale of...

    Brown spots on leaves

It's insect damage. What do the under side of the leaves look like?

    Coconut Choir

Recently I opened a bale of choir to string the hops. Most of the bundles are solid. Three out of the fifteen bundles I have used have had a weak spot near the middle of the string that breaks under easy pressure. When this occurs I loose 75 - 80% of the bundle. Has anyone else had this...

    Spider mites?

I can see a few aphid eggs in the picture. Doesn't look like aphid damage though. Insecticidal soap has good knock down properties for soft bodies. I use m-pede for soap. Neem also has good results. Not sure what people are using. I generally use a product called Trilogy. If your plants are...

    Does rain flush out fertilizer?

I use Neptune's Harvest for fish emulsion. A lot of places carry it in small amounts. You can also order wholesale direct from them out of Boston. To find compost look for farms in your area. Many farmers have compost piles that they are willing to sell to consumers. It never hurts to ask...

what can i spray on aphids that won't ruin my nearly ready to pick cones?

It will depend on acreage and food supply for ladybugs to make a permanent home. Even then its very expensive and very time consuming. M-pede, and if you would like to use neem, Trilogy are both OMRI rated pesticides. They do not add anything to the hop, neither of them are transdermal...

what can i spray on aphids that won't ruin my nearly ready to pick cones?

m-pede is an insecticidal soap that I've had good results with aphids. Do not waste money on ladybugs for outdoor applications unless you have something that will keep them around. A good majority just leave the field.

    Does rain flush out fertilizer?

Bone and blood meal will just be extra nitrogen and phosphorus and calcium. It won't help keep the fertilizer in the soil if the soil has high drainage qualities. You can incorporate compost into your soils around your plant to increase fertilizer retention. Knowing the pH of the soil will...

    Great Lakes Hops

Great Lakes are good people who know what they are doing. I've ordered about three thousand plants through them in the last year. All came alive and healthy. I would highly suggest paying for faster shipping if you can.

    Does rain flush out fertilizer?

That will depend on your soil composition, pH, and organic matter %. But overall, nine inches of rain will wash out most of your fertilizer. However, I would wait at least three weeks before giving them another feeding of 10-10-10. What are the soils like in southern Indiana? You can also...
