Agree totally, all you need is unbleached flour and water to make the best unadulterated sourdough starter. It may take about a week at normal 70*F room temperature to culture it but it will keep making bread for as long as you take care of it . Using it making bread every week is the best way...

    Anyone into vintage snowmobiles?

Looks good for its age . There was a vintage sled race here over the weekend. 42 sleds total ,1973 and older one lungers. Heard about it in the newspaper. http://upnorthmotorsports.bangordailynews.com/2020/02/17/home/forty-two-vintage-one-cylinder-snowmobiles-in-one-race/

    Homemade Bread Thread

How sour or tangy does everyone like their sourdough breads ? The more time it ferments the tangier it gets . Been going two or three rises before hitting the loaf pan, sometime overnight in the fridge depending on time of day it gets started. The more fermented it is the easier the wheat is...

    Anyone into vintage snowmobiles?

Not as old as the Moto ski but considered a antique at 31 yrs old. 89 440 Arctic Cat Panther, elec start and reverse is nice. Rode on those moto skis, sno jets (the blue ones) and evinrudes (the white ones) in the 60s and 70s. My dad had either a johnson or john deere . Fun to think back to...

Yup, feed it and put it in the fridge within an hour usually. Like to see a few bubbles first. 10 years this year with the same starter, keep it in a ceramic bean crock.

Same bad bitter moldy orange flavor to all of my IPA's

I've brewed the M-80 from Morebeer and liked it, In fact I am getting another one delivered today. Also have been brewing their Columbus IPA for several years and is my favorite. Never noticed a moldy orange flavor from any of their kits. The M-80 is high on the bitter scale though and is due to...

    Lowering IBUs

Really liking the idea of a 15 min boil. Think I'll try that cascade pale ale recipe on my next IPA brew. That hour long thing I've always done is a bit too long. Thanks for the links...

    Lowering IBUs

OK thanks that makes better sense than my idea. So, if 90% of the bittering is done in the first 30 mins why do the kits say boil for an hour i wonder ?. I usually add most of the extract toward the end of the boil so why not shorten the boil time down to say 40-45 mins. ? The late addition...

    Lowering IBUs

Can I lower IBUs in a extract kit by boiling the bittering hops say 45 mins instead of 60 ? The kit is a 6.5 abv with 75-80 IBUs. 2 oz. Columbus is the bittering hops. Would it affect the balance of the beer by lowering the IBUs to around 50 - 60 IBUs?

Anyone ever use their fruit for anything after being in the secondary for a couple weeks ? Hate to toss 3 qts of alcohol laced fruit. Smoothies ? Cake ,cobbler or pie bar type dishes? I know whatever is done to add sugar. Thanks for any advice..

    Acerglyn ratio?

This maple wine is going gangbusters. Four days of active fermentation and its almost halfway there with specific gravity now at 1.060. It dropped 20 points in the last day.

    Acerglyn ratio?

I see now what I am making is Maple Wine and this is in the wrong forum. Noob. Anyhow, progressing nicely, about 30 hrs after pitching saw some airlock activity. Removed the cover and laid a towel over it. The whole house smells of it. The 8 gram yeast packet had been in the fridge for 2 1/2...

    Sanitizing bottles ?

How will I know if the beer in the bottle is infected ? Looks? Taste ? smell ? Don't think I have ever had one.

    Sanitizing bottles ?

Does anyone not rinse their bottles in sanitizing solution before bottling beer? I rinse my bottles well with water after emptying them and after they dry store them in the covered carboard container. All ready to go on bottling day. No problems yet, You ?

    Don't Do That.

Was aerating my cooled wort by pouring back and forth from boil pot to fermenting bucket. Sunglasses over my ball cap visor fell into the boil pot and sank to the bottom. Fished them out of the almost empty boil pot just before they went into the fermenter. Take your sunglasses off your hat...
