    1.Grass\Weed Control --- 2.Splitting Crowns

    Im using black plastic with holes cut around each rhizome and newspaper mulch in each hole. Basically just laying down newspaper 10-15 layers thick around each plant. This is my strategy for the coming season, last year I tried to keep them at bay by hand, but my eight 60 foot long rows were far...

    Homeade "Minute Wine" Questions

    You should really look into everclear if you are just looking for a cheap drunk. Homebrewing has a habit of getting way more expensive than you mean it to be.

    Large scale hop growing in the southeast

    The pasture is 9 acres, the property is over 100. The ownership is a limited partnership, if a majority decides to sell it is all sold. In any case, my hop farm will go on! Ive secured a small place in town rent-free for the next 5 or 6 years. Im hoping to grow enough hops to supply my future...

    Large scale hop growing in the southeast

    Ive got 200 rhizomes planted, most of them are breaking ground; however im going to have to move my operation off of the family farm next season due to rancor amongst the family. And by the way. That first post was a huge lie. I am actually a generation younger than I made myself out to be, I...

    Second year == whoa

    Second year is indeed Crazy. I put in 1 rhizome last year and 200 rhizomes this year the new ones aren't even out of the ground yet, but the one from last year is 4 feet tall and has 3 bines almost as thick as pencils. I was out on the farm watering today and, over the course of the 3 or 4 hours...

    2010 Hops Gardens

    Just got my babies planted, drip irrigation in the works, still have to throw the strings over the top-wire. 50 each of Cascade, centennial, nugget, and willamette. Now the waiting game begins.

    When to plant??

    I would just plant them. They survive every winter, why should a late frost kill them? They are probably sitting in your fridge right now... cold.

    Growing Hops In SC?

    Goldings would be a bad idea. The Advice everyone has given me is to stick to the "C" hops, cascade, columbus, etc. But, I am putting in 200 rhizomes this year in Blythewood SC: 50 each of Cascade, Centennial, Willamette, and Nugget. As to spacing, just make sure to separate the varieties...

    Weeds

    Hey dan, Do you by any chance have bees? Ive got some hives that need a queen, and your mentioning of clover as a cover crop makes me want to see about getting clover for my hop-farm and starting up those hives!
