    Weighting down oak chips

Use any of the stainless steel fittings you have on your equipment, sanitize them, then put them in the nylon bag. Also, it would be "Weighing down oak chips." No letter T.

    Improved Mash Efficiency - Thanks!

Slowed your runoff.... like only opening the valve half way when draining the mash tun? That increases efficiency? I typically always just open the valve 100%.

    Help chilling wort

I haven't tried my plan yet, but I bought a submersible aquarium pump and plan to fill one of my 6gal brew buckets with water and ice. I'll use an immersion wort chiller, and pump the ice water through the chiller, then recirculate the water back into the brew bucket. I'll add ice as needed.

Could you substitute Safale 05 for the yeast?

Specialty IPA: Black IPA Darth Vader - Black IPA

Brewing this recipe right now. Had to swap in 1lb of chocolate malt for the Carafa II special. And used 1lb of Special Roast since it was available in 1lb packs. Getting ready to start the boil/hop schedule. Looking forward to trying this in a couple weeks. I'm planning to primary for 2 weeks...

    English Barleywine Fireside Barleywine

3 weeks later, I racked the Jr. Barleywine to the secondary and measured a 1.012 gravity. This might be the lowest gravity I've ever gotten, so that was nice. The sample tasted good, the smoked malt was noticeable. I'm going to bottle next week using 3/4 cup of DME I think. At the same time...

    Porter Brew Day

Nice modification to the recipe with adding the toasted nibs and coffee. I'm glad you were able to taste them. The next time I try something like that, I'll try toasting them and soaking them in alcohol first. When I used coffee, I cold-brewed ground coffee and added that into my bottling bucket...

    English Barleywine Fireside Barleywine

Mashed for 90min with 7gals of water. Sparged with another 2gals - barely collected 4gals afterwards. :) I ended up adding additional water to bring it up for ~5.5gals. Boiling right now... hoping my propane tank will last for at least a 90-120min boil. I added another 3.5gals of water to my...

    English Barleywine Fireside Barleywine

Starting to brew this in the next 1-2 hours. Had to modify the grain bill slightly based on LHBS availability. Went with: 10lb Marris Otter 3lb Smoke 2lb Munich .5lb 60L .5lb Special B 16lbs total - Going to mash with ~7gals of water. I might try what some other guys have done and...

    Porter Brew Day

I like your homemade sparging bucket too. I might try something like that.

    Porter Brew Day

Looks great - nice frothy, smooth color. Makes me want to drink a thick porter right now. Did you add crushed oats? I like adding crushed oats to my porters and stouts to give them a thicker mouthfeel. In addition to the coffee addition, have you thought about adding cocoa nibs too? Chocolate...

American IPA Purring Kitten Session IPA

Getting ready to mash-in this recipe right now!

    Should I use this?

Isn't that how sour beers are made?

    English Barleywine Fireside Barleywine

Why are guys pitching new yeast in at bottling? Is it because after you primary and secondary it for 1-3 months total, the yeast are inactive? If you have 4gals at the end of secondary and you are ready to bottle, do you just dump in a yeast pack, stir, then bottle? Or do you have to add some...

    English Barleywine Fireside Barleywine

Thanks for the clarification. So basically by using table sugar with this recipe, we are jacking up the alcohol content without changing the flavor?

    English Barleywine Fireside Barleywine

Clarification - the 1.5lbs of sugar used.... it says table sugar. Is this just like granulated sugar you cook with in the kitchen? Or is this something you buy at your LHBS as sucrose? Could you substitute dry malt extract or something instead? Why table sugar? Thanks

Could you just use a metal hose clamp?

That's the recipe I'm leaning towards right now, thanks. :)

Random leftover hops - help me make an IPA recipe!

Thank you to those who offered hop schedules and combinations as opposed to those trying to correct my terminology of IPAs. :off:
