☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Here are my go to starting weights and charge temps: -450g = 240 C -680g = 280 C -900g = 310 C So I'm charging quite a bit higher than you. Depending on the beans and my weight I'll usually start at P6, then at yellowing I go to P8. After two min I go to P7, then after a min P6, then after a...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Hey there! Without knowing what sorts of times you're hitting various parts of the roast, I can't contribute too much at this point. BUT for what it's worth I'll share my general process: I also pull back heat a bit towards the beginning which I have found adds sweetness. I get back on the heat...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Well howdy fake friends, it's been a while! (especially since my post in March where I said I'd try to be better about logging on...). More of the same over here. The Bullet has been running smoothly after a few upgrades (including a much needed replaced drum bearing). I finally got around to...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Dammit @pshankstar ! I'm sorry to hear that. That grinder had a great run though. I just looked, and I had bought that on March 18, 2015, so it had a ten year run. Thanks for the tag, I have neglected this site for months for no good reason. Once work blocked HBT I've struggled to get on here...

Man I have been gone from here for way too long. Looks like this thread has kinda died. Anyone around? Bueller? Bueller?

@TrickyDick sorry, I missed your post about burrs. First, about the hopper, my Vario has a similar issue with coming loose. I honestly just put a small piece of tape on the back to keep it from vibrating loose. About the burrs though, yeah ceramic is meant for espresso grind. It can handle...

I noticed that the other day. They did a little better job this time around with noting flavor profiles. I'm thinking I may buy a round from them soon.

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Nine years ago today I roasted my first batch of coffee on my grill with a whirly pop. Hard to believe how far I've come since then and how much I still don't know!

Haha not at all, he's a pretty decent dude. I was actually the original owner of your roaster. That thing has been awesome over the years, and I hope it continues to work well for you!

Another option for smoke control, for a while I used the roast in the bathroom with the exhaust fan running and that worked pretty well.

@TrickyDick do you have images of your roast curves that you could post here? Maybe we could lend a hand with the issues you've been experiencing. Cleaned up my deck and enjoying about 4 minutes of solitude before the toddler awakes. Beautiful morning here!

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Right you are! I put 1 tbsp of bourbon in a mason jar with 1 Lb of coffee beans, let rest for 5 days, then roast. Move the beans around as you pass them the first few days to encourage even soaking. You do have to hit them with more heat given the moisture you've added. My recipe gives a...

Cheapest valve bags I've seen without a minimum order is Burman. I usually order a hundred from them whenever I place my order. Price went up a little but I think it's still only about $.40/bag

@pshankstar whoa whoa whoa, I thought we had an unofficial deal that you'd be taking my Bullet someday! To go alongside my previous grinder and Behmor... :p In all seriousness the Bullet is an amazing roaster and I've never regretted purchasing it. In terms of "extras", I don't really think you...

Yeah it sounds like a bigger pain than it is. I need to do a deep clean and probably will adjust mine a bit. If I ever get around to it I'll post the process here for the Bullet guys.

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

@TrickyDick Try keeping it a little slow so they don't rush into 1c early. I like to stretch out development on Ethiopians like this - it helps bring out sweetness and also prevents the small beans from going into 1c too soon. Regarding potential for them to come out the front, I've had this...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

@TrickyDick i also haven't been brewing, probably in two plus years. Now that my baby is 14 months it's pretty impossible - if I'm in the kitchen, he wants to be there too and be held. Coffee roasting is so rewarding for the time it requires (compared to brewing). There was a time we never...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

I don't know the science of it but I do know that well rested coffee always did much better for my espresso than fresh. I would usually not pull shots from anything younger than 2, preferably 3 weeks. Not sure about oil content. I hardly roast anything past 18 percent development and get...
