Lots of electric lurking. Why so much BIAB?

I see no reason to get away from BIAB before adding controllers etc. I built my setup as a PID controlled eBIAB system with recirculation. I went BIAB because I could start for cheaper - big stainless pots, coolers, and weldless fittings add up quickly. I happened to have a spa panel...

Citra Pale Ale - Suggestions Please!

Thanks for the replies so far. I used this calculator: http://www.brewersfriend.com/ibu-calculator/ which says it uses tinseth calculations. Not that it matters much, other than ensuring that I consistently measure the same way for my system and recipes. I am bumping the bitterness slightly...

Citra Pale Ale - Suggestions Please!

My second all grain brew was a simple Citra SMaSH. Not much to it, I used 10 lbs 2-row, and 2oz of Citra (laptop with my notes isn't handy at the moment for timing of additions, but there was a small 60min, and the remainder was near the end), and US-05 for yeast. I calculated it around...

    Under-carbed: Questions about possible causes

I brewed a milk stout a few weeks back, and bottled it 2.5 weeks ago. I was out of corn sugar for priming, so I used DME, weighed according to http://www.northernbrewer.com/priming-sugar-calculator/. I cold crashed first, but it was in the fridge about a week before I got to bottling it...

    ris in keg?

Isn't the low carbonation level exactly why you would use nitro? It doesn't dissolve into solution with the beer, allowing you to serve at a higher pressure level than you want to carbonate to, which allows for good head even in low carved beer?

What is your preferred priming sugar, and why?

I've bottled a few batches now. Thus far, I have used corn sugar. No problems with it. I have a batch to bottle today, and don't have any on hand, so I will likely use some DME, which I do have. I have heard people say that using table sugar gives a cidery taste. I'm most options leave some...

Beginner control panel help please.. GFCI breaker trips immediately

Do you by any chance have a dryer outlet at the wall, with a dryer cord to run your element? If so, try running the kettle plugged directly into the wall. Your element doesn't use the neutral. The lights will, as will the controller. If the kettle works ok direct from the outlet, then the...

    Melted 40Amp FOTEK SSR

I've recently finished building an eBIAB setup. I bought a MyPin TD4 PID, which came with a 40A Fotek relay. I could get it to run and boil, but not actually control temps, or even limit the strength of the boil with identical behavior to what you describe. Researching the causes, and it seemed...

Using A Blender To Crush Grain?

http://westernmalt.webs.com/brochure.htm - they've recently opened a small order desk, and have done away with their small order fee. They supply a number of breweries, large and small, but some of the local clubs have been doing group buys from them for years. They don't sell any other brewing...

Using A Blender To Crush Grain?

Anyone else do this? Any reasons not to for someone doing BIAB? I'm just getting going, and I built my own mill from a pasta roller (there is a lengthy thread about it here somewhere...). Worked great for the first batch, but I suspect the bushings didn't think much of how fast I was driving...

How should I upgrade to all-grain

I'm 2 batches in, and just still making changes and adjustments to my setup, so this is just my current experience. I built a PID controlled eBIAB system. I found that I would get different readings moving the thermometer around in the mash, and my temp probe would change readings by about a...

How should I upgrade to all-grain

cheapest bet is Brew In A Bag. You have a pot and a heat source, so you basically just need a bag. Many use paint strainer bags from any hardware store, which costs just a few dollars.

    Heating element covers

I masked everything off, and sprayed it with a half dozen coats of Rustoleum Progrip. Gives it a good thick rubber coat, and it is advertised as being suitable to protect against electrical shorts. I've just run my first batch, and am still tinkering with the setup. I intend to post pics etc...
