    First brew ever! -- One-gallon all-Chinook IPA-type-thing...

Do you do "oven door all the way open", "oven door cracked open" or "oven door shut"? Curious minds want to know. :D

10 Things I Love About 1 Gallon Brewing

Ditto what DonovanMaxwell said. New to brewing, skipped extract all together (not really interested), and working in smaller increments makes learning all-grain on the go much less intimidating than if I were trying for 5-gallon batches. Also, I like beer a lot, but I don't always like a...

    First brew ever! -- One-gallon all-Chinook IPA-type-thing...

I'm kinda embarrassed I didn't think of the oven thing... that's fantastic! The lowest my oven goes is 170... would that be too hot if I just preheated it and then turned it off before setting the mash pot inside? Maybe with the door open? The stick is a good idea too, thank you for both!

    First brew ever! -- One-gallon all-Chinook IPA-type-thing...

My very first brew! I've been devouring books (and new beers) for the last month, and reading up a lot online getting ready for my first brew. It's a one gallon test batch, did it all in-kitchen. All-grain, strainer-sparged (a-la Brookyln Brew Shop technique) and fermenting in a 4L Carlo...

    lets see your full Fermenters

Here's my very first brew... a 1-gallon all-grain Chinook IPA type-thing (lost some volume to whole leaf hops and I'm sure my gravity is higher than I wanted). Still, went pretty well for the the first time!

Growing hops to shade greenhouse in summer? Help me think this through.

It seems that Chinook is also more tolerant of various soil types/situations, and is one of the more disease/pest resistant varieites (we have Japanese Beetles here in biblical proportions every year). Large side arms as well. Chinook is looking like our winner here.

Would definitely be interested. Tried to email you, but Gmail didn't like the slash in the email address. I sent you a PM.

And both of those varieties are supposed to do quite well in this area. :rockin:

Growing hops to shade greenhouse in summer? Help me think this through.

Thanks all for the input. The exterior of the poly panels doesn't get too hot, I don't think. And I'm planning on spacing the supports up off them so hopefully that won't kill it. For harvesting, I would have easy access to the roof peak from the other side of the building, I could just...

Growing hops to shade greenhouse in summer? Help me think this through.

I'd be willing to grow all one variety on the greenhouse if that meant I could let them grow thicker than if I tried to keep several varieties separated (I have other places on the property where I could plant hops as well if I want other varieties). The thrust here would be the addition of...

Growing hops to shade greenhouse in summer? Help me think this through.

I need some input from those of you who have experience growing hops. Bit of an intro here, bear with me. We've just completed construction on a 12'x48' passive solar greenhouse on our property that we'll be using to grow edibles during the fall, winter and spring: It faces due south...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

So I should be able to tell if mine is plated, correct? As in, once I start mucking up the surface of the rollers the plating would be flaking off everywhere? I ask because several other people in the thread have stated that theirs was plated, which isn't surprising... the machine being...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

Okay, so I just waded through most of the 61 pages of this amazing, awe-inspiring thread... because I picked up an Amaco pasta machine at the thrift shop for a fiver today and was looking for a good tutorial on how to convert it to avoid splashing out for a "proper" grain mill. Kudos to you DIY...

New brewer from Central East Ohio

Central Ohio here. Pre-novice brewer, inspired recently by a friend who showed me the ropes of an all-grain brew and am trying to do my homework and get knowledgable before I start my first batch. Hoping to find some other Ohio folks on here!
