    Frozen Secondary

I assume there's not an issue with my APA itself, but i recently cleaned my fridge's element of frost and I discovered the low temp setting I had actually froze the beer - not completely, but more like a slush. I reset the temp and will rack to keg after it defrosts, but anyone know of special...

    Raising Temp for Slow Ferment

I'm going to chalk this up as a success and leave behind what I did for others who read the string. I was able to raise the temp 2deg per 2L soda bottle of hot tap water with the Cool Brewing bag for roughly 6hrs. I used 2-3 bottles at a time. I successfully raised the temp from 65deg to 70deg...

    Raising Temp for Slow Ferment

I have an IPA a week into primary where activity is really slowing, but I need to squeeze out a minimum of 5 more gravity points. It's frigid here in SE PA right now and my basement has dipped to the low 60s. Here's some basic stats - 1.063 OG, 151deg mash, WL Dry English. Gravity reading on...

Missed gravity on Belgian IPA - candy syrup?

I had a misadventure of a brew-day - missed my gravity on a split-batch American IPA and Belgian IPA - 7gal boil, water-back two fermenters to 5gal each. Gravity just cracked 1.050 and should have been 1.060+ I can do the American IPA as a session, but the Belgian- has anyone added Belgian candy...

    Possible Infection

Curious...what was the end result? I have the exact ring on my Dubbel - tasting it for the first time tonight and I noticed the ring. My bottle wand put a little foam on a number while filling and I think that might have been it.

Dried Cascade Hops Smell Like Hay

Very efficient design, actually! We had a heat wave here in PA when I was drying them in the garage - I got down the 20-25% of original weight in 36hrs. Thanks for the input. I was making tea with them before I picked certain sections and they sure had the flavor and look to be picked. Good to...

    Racked Lager Too Soon?

(Cont'd)... Lastly, never rack to the secondary until you hit terminal gravity. Drop the last few points off using a diacytel rest. If you're gravity stalls on primary, try yeast energizer and gently rouse the yeast. If you rack prematurely, very doubtful you'll reach a true final gravity and...

    Racked Lager Too Soon?

I just saw this - sorry. Unfortunately, i chalked it up to learning. There's better beers to be had than choking down a bad one. I've learned a lot since this post. Lager beer is finicky, but there's a couple tricks I honed in on to get it right. First, LOTS of yeast. Make a 2L starter. Plenty...

Dried Cascade Hops Smell Like Hay

I dried them in a non-heated oast - box fan with screen-bottom crates (BYO mag DIY from spring issue), so can't be too hot.

Dried Cascade Hops Smell Like Hay

I'm sure the short answer on this one is 8 probably picked too early - but - I think the question now is if the Cascade hops I picked and dried are useable. They did have tell-tale signs of ripeness - brown tips and/or papery feel, crinkly, darker color, etc - lupulin was present but not quite...

    Hard Mass on Fermenter Bottom

You'd think I'd have noticed this after 12yrs in service - drrr. Thanks!

    Hard Mass on Fermenter Bottom

I'd feel pretty dumb I that's what it is :) I thought about that but I just can't remember. It's the variety without the ribbing - just the giant smooth bottle look.

    Hard Mass on Fermenter Bottom

I'm on the tail end of primary fermentation and am trying to get the last few points of the gravity before racking by gently rousing the yeast. I noticed what feels like a hard mass right in the center of the bottom of the fermenter - glass, 6.5g. Rock hard. I used Safale US-05 and dry hopped...

Bottling Question - WLP080 Cream Ale

I usually keg, but will be bottling my Cream Ale since I've got my two kegs occupied. My question is how top-cropping is WLP080 Cream Ale Yeast Blend? I know it's a blend of lager and ale yeast, but I'm concerned a lot of the yeast may be left behind after racking to the secondary. Would it be...

    Munich Dunkel recommendations

It's not German, but Negro Modelo is a fantastic Dunkel Lager. I also just had Saranac's Winter Lager, a Dunkel, but that's soon to be off the shelves. All-time favorite is the Ayinger Altbairish Dunkel - just wonderful beer with such depth.

Immersion Chiller - sub zero temps?

Well, the spigot wouldn't defrost - had to pull plan B and haul 6.5gal of hot wort inside and run a hose up from the basement into the kitchen. Investing in the pond pump from Amazon before next brew - great idea.

Immersion Chiller - sub zero temps?

Crap that's a great idea - not sure I can get one of those by tomorrow morning though :/

Immersion Chiller - sub zero temps?

I guess my main concern is the pipe is so freaking cold that as soon as I turn the water on it'll instantly freeze before it even hits the hose. I'm brewing a Helles (yes, already named Helles Frozen Over), so I want a good cold break and I don't think I'll get that without a chiller - we have...

Immersion Chiller - sub zero temps?

Call me dedicated or dumb, I'm brewing here in SE Pa tomorrow and it will be about 13deg F in the afternoon. I'm mashing indoors, but full-wort boiling outside and realized getting my immersion chiller is could be a challenge. I'm considering heating up my hose-bib with a hair dryer just before...
